A House investigative panel on Thursday announced multiple ethics charges against Rep. Charles Rangel.

The announcement means the case will go on trial before a separate ethics committee, which will decide whether the alleged violations are backed up by the evidence.

Rangel, a New York Democrat, said he looks forward to the trial. He said Thursday that he's been asking for the opportunity to explain himself to his constituents for two years.

Rangel was chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee until he stepped down in March following criticism from the ethics committee regarding a separate case.

The announcement Thursday did not specify which alleged violations would be considered during the trial.

They could be waiting to pounce on him while they make their case like they did with Jefferson.

I wouldn't if I were in his situation. Not with as many charges as he is facing.

He need's ro resign immediately. I am not saying that because he is a Democrat because he would be replaced by a Democrat, but the guy is corrupt and right now is inneffective in Congress. We need someone in there atleast who is credible in his place.

I see not everyone is a member of the 'ITs America , so if you did nothing wrong you should have nothing to hide or worry about' crowd, that was so popular back in the OJ days,,,and the current illegal immigration days,,,

He's been more then accused. He was found guilty by different committees and panels. It now goes to the next level.

If it has to go to trial, it still isnt proven.

'In March, Rangel reluctantly stepped down as chairman of the Ways and Means Committee -- a week after the ethics panel ruled in a separate case that he had broken congressional gift rules by accepting trips to conferences in the Caribbean that were financed by corporate interests. The panel said that, at a minimum, Rangel's staff knew about the corporate backing for the 2007 and 2008 trips -- and that the congressman was therefore responsible. '

sounds to me he is going to fight this logic,,,holding him responsible for what 'staff' may or may not have had knowledge of...

a charge is a formal accusation, it is not the same as guilt which must be proven

Here is a copy of the most recent poll on the Rangel situation.

Should Rangel Be Allowed to Cut a Deal?

No -- He’s accused of some serious violations and Americans have a right to know the full facts. 98% (130,879 votes)

Yes -- If Rangel and the congressional panel can avoid a drawn-out process and work something out, they should. 1% (1,600 votes)

Not sure -- Is this really going to accomplish anything? 1% (1,017 votes)

Other (post a comment) <1% (593 votes)

Total Votes: 134,089

It's not false accusations when someone is activily looking for a plea deal.

is it your contention that noone who asked for a deal was ever innocent of the accusations?

do you also believe everyone in jail is there because they did what they were accused of doing?

just wondering,,, does PROOF of guilt ever preempt ACCUSATIONS of guilt in this 'innocent until proven guilty' society?
