Topic: Money talks??

So my bf and I were in a heated debate over this topic last night and wondered what everyone else's thoughts were?

Apparently there was a news blurb about certain airlines allowing customers to pay an additional fee along with their ticket cost to get priority during the check-in process. Not as in First Class or any of their premium member service options, but someone flying in Coach could add an additional fee to their ticket price to be able to cut in line during check-in and get processed faster.

Now, I do not see anything wrong with this. Yes it sucks for us poor folks who don't have the money to do so, but to me it is no different than paying a premium to be in First Class and get preferential treatment, better seats, priority check-in and etc. But he was down right incensed over it saying if he had been standing in line for 30 minutes and some Joe-blow off the street came running in late and paid an extra $20 (just an arbitrary number) and was allowed to cut in front of him, he would be getting into fights right and left. When I asked who his complaint would be with, he said both the customer and the airline. The customer for being rude and the airline for accepting the rudeness and getting paid for it.
I pretty much said...why fault the customer? They are just taking advantage of an opportunity given to them? I then asked if he would feel the same way about someone who had a First Class ticket being able to walk right up to a separate counter and get checked in without standing in line? He said no, that was different. But is it really?

Just thought I would open it up for discussion considering it is a very REAL possibility that this will become reality with most of the airlines since they are desperate for new ways to make extra money.

they are not as desperate (for money) as you might think.. they made over 16 billion dollars last year just on baggage fees, not including any other fee they impose. so i agree with your boyfriend, i would be upset at this too, just because someone can or wants to pay extra money to cut in line does not make it right or fair.

BUT...do you take it out on the consumer who is simply taking advantage of an offer made to them or on the airline for allowing it? In my opinion, I don't think it's fair to get mad at the person for taking advantage of an offer because they have the money to do so and I do not?

i'm not sure how to answer that... i do not believe in that kind of "extras" being offered to anyone. in all fairness, first come first serve has always been fair in the past. instead of the airline doing something to solve the problem, they turn it into a greedy maneuver that scams people out of money for something that should be a service. when people buy into this kind of thing, they are telling the airlines "go ahead, it's a good idea". if they didn't buy it, they won't try to charge it. i personally don't think it's a good idea, so i could see that i might get upset if i was to see it happen. remember, everyone that buys a ticket is getting on the plane, just a matter of when.

i don't know about anyone else, but nickle and dimeing just pisses me off, and makes it where i don't want to use that company for anything.
unfortunately, there's so much of it i'm running out of companies not to use...

I'm not sure how anyone would see it as not being fair since people are paying for this. Just as people pay for first class. No one is being forced to pay it either.

I agree. It's no different than paying more money for first class or better seats at a concert or better anything.

sorry, like i said, i just don't believe in that kind of general sillyness... what exactly do you get for the extra charge? maybe i'm missing something, but to pay extra to get processed faster, and then just go sit on the plane? is that it? i can wait, not a big deal to me.

So tell me, why would you get mad because someone spent their money to get through a line faster? Or spent their money to sit in first class?

I don't see this as much different than flashing cash at the bartender and tipping big to get better service. We call people with money "priveleged" for a reason. Money can buy lots of silly things. ohwell

I was standing in line for many hours to meet a famous UFC fighter with some friends. Found out later that people who spent money at they place we were all waiting got first priority while those of us who had to wait for HOURS didn't even get to meet him!

I can't understand why people would get upset unless they didn't know about the express service being offered. I travel ALOT and it's not like I'm Rockafeller or nothing but I really like the VIP service.... waiting 2-3 hours in a comfy lounge having cocktails & snacks is usually part of the whole VIP experience... I recommend it strongly. If you hate me for it.... well tough!laugh

I don't see why anyone would get mad unless they want that special treatment and can't afford it. Otherwise, what's the big deal? Pay for what you want, or don't complain about it.

If I could afford business class all the the time while flying, I'd absolutely do it. The lounges are nice and the seats and the seats are comfy. The free alcohol is not bad either.
