OK, here it is: My kid (35) applied for a job with a local engineering firm, filled out app, resume, etc. The owner is 33. Went in for his interview yesterday. First question the owner asked him was why he spent 6 years in the military, didn't he have anything better to do with his life other than waste it in the Navy? The kid explained that he felt it was his responsibility to give back to the country for the benefits and advantages living in the USA gave him. The guy told him that he, the owner, did not owe this country ****, and he had no use for anyone who had served in the military and wasted those years of their life, and that the interview was over. I was proud of my kid...lol..he did not punch him in the mouth like I probably would have. I mean...WTF....Oh, and just a side note, the owner is head of the county democratic committee(not to bash democrats and start a political fight, just saying ....wtf)

Better that he found out this assshat's anti-military position BEFORE he decided to work for him. Next thing he might want to consider is sending a letter regarding this episode to this guy's boss. Go over his head. Matter of fact, my general principle for handling this kind of situation (regardless of topic) is to send my FIRST letter to the PRESIDENT of the company ... your son, having been in the military, knows all too well what happens when 'schit rolls downhill'. After something like this, it's fun to start the turd on its journey ... I hope he creams this assshat good ... Damn - wait - I just read that this guy IS the owner ... Damn ... Well, the dude's lucky he didn't get a mouthful of fist ...

Well I can't say I am a fan of the military these days but........I think your kid got a raw deal to be judged based on that alone.

I don't agree with the way the guy handled it, but you cannot expect everyone to hire someone based on their experience in the military. The guy was unprofessional, but as the owner, he has the right to choose the type of experience he wants his employees to have.
About your side note, you say you're not trying to bash democrats, but that's what it seems like you're doing. If you weren't trying to, why bring it up at all? |

Here, employers would rather hire military and ex-military people instead of civilians in as according to them; we aren't lazy, know how to work hard and don't call in sick everytime we have a sniffle. We had one company here that did something similiar to what happend to your son and needless to say the company went out of business as everyone boycotted the business due to this incident making the press. Here the public stands behind our military and supports us. I am proud to serve in our military and glad that I have the support of the citizens here. |

I commend your son for his service and not punching the owner in the face. He deserves better than to work for him anyways.
He did not handle that interwiew well at all and should have just went on with the interview and been an aduld about the matter. There is no need to insult your son for what he did with his life. It was his choice to join the military and if the owner didn't like that well then that's his issue to deal with. |

One thing a few years in the military instills in you is self discipline. Something a lot, not all but a lot, of younger people "working" in America today seem to lack.
I am not sure but isn't it illegal to not hire someone because of military service? |

I worked with some great civies; my boss being one of the hardest workers I have ever seen. Its really about work ethics. |
