I always had a crush on Curly. They were all brothers except Larry (Fine). Even in the later years. Such simpleness, now its violence and mindlessness. Slapstick still will give a giggle when nothing else will.
I remember watching them everyday after school @ 5p before dinner. In the 70's(?), they were taken off the air for the suggestion of 'violence'. The idea being that children would start imitating what they saw on tv. Even at the age, we knew the stuff they hit each other with (with exception of the pies ![]() I did end up watching them instead of the Yoga. For me, it was more healing at the time. Everyone needs a real good laugh at life's silliness at times. |

The Three Stooges had an amazingly long career- starting as a Vaudeville act in 1925. The final Three Stooges appearance was Kook's Tour in 1970(a pilot for a TV series). During filming Larry Fine suffered a stroke. There was talk of trying to replace Larry, but it never came to be.
During their vaudeville days they weren't known as The Three Stooges, and had other members in the group. Ted Healy was the original leader of the group. Shemp Howard was brought on for a short while but he disliked Healy and left. Mo then suggested his other brother Jerry. Healy didn't think Jerry looked funny enough, so Jerry left, and then came back with a shaved head. Jerry commented that he looked "girly", Healy thought he said "Curly" and the name stuck. Ted Healy appeared in early features with the gang, but for the same reasons Shemp had left- Mo, Larry, and Curly split from Healy and they became The Three Stooges that we know. After 14 years Curly suffered a stroke, so Shemp was brought back on. But only on the condition that he would be able to leave once Curly recovered. Sadly Curly didn't, and passed away at 48. Finally Joe Besser replaced Shemp and became the second "Curly" after 16 film appearances Curly Joe DeRita came aboard and performed with them to the end. Sorry it's so long. I'm a huge Stooges fan. There are excellent biographies on them out there, but the best is Moe Howard & the Three Stooges by Moe Howard- if you can find it, read it. |
