I just had to ask. I've seen several threads about this tonight and I seem to be the only one confused. I actually thought they were very different.

different to each person. To me they are different as night and day. To one of my friends, well she sees them as one in the same. Everyone has a different view on this question.

it depends,,, if someone asks 'have you been intimate with,,,'

thats a question about having sex

IF I tell my partner 'I need more intimacy',, that statement isnt about sex..

I definitely think they are different. Sex is an act that can be devoid of emotion. Intimacy involves emotion and does not have to but will most likely include sex.

My thoughts exactly. Intimacy takes trust. Sex just takes the right parts.bigsmile

Oh and mods, please don't move this. It isn't really about sex at all.

Intimacy could be just thought provoking acts, such as showing more skin or acting or talking in a way that stimulates you to fee aroused by it and gives you wild fantasies and makes you sexually attracted to that particular person.

nope. Intimacy requires trust. Sex requires hormones and genitals!

depends on if you're talking to a man or a woman.

to most of us men, intimacy and sex go hand in hand.
women seem to be able to differentiate the two.

Intimacy requires an emotion and trust and sex isn't required.
Sex requires two bodies, no emotion or trust. Just the genitals.
So many times sex is related to intimacy. It is if you have no feelings for the other person. Of course there is sex before an emotional relationship, Sex I think of is a FWB or NSA or one night stand or Several night stands. You have sex on the first few dates, after you get emotionally involved you make love and grow intimate. Sex without feeling or intimacy and many marriages get routine without emotion.

I'm just rambling on here because it ticks me off when someone says 'we got intimate on the first date, or if you are married and close emotionally to say your intimate moments are sex

Two different things. Hard to explain though, especially since so many people use the word intimacy in the same way they would use the word sex. So I just boil it down to: one night stand=sex relationship involving honest feelings between two people=intimacy.

They can be so closely related. I think that sex can physically give rise (sorry for the joke) to feelings of initimacy before any emotional reasons for it exist. When I was very young and new to sex I would experience strong feelings of bonding with whomever was on top of me and would sometimes cry.

isn't that more of a physical attachment then an emotional one?

You think your physical and emotional elements can operate independently without practice? Think about trying not to get psyched out at bat or shooting pool. They're very connected; we have to practice to divide them.

i think that is where men and women differ.

emotion comes along at a much more reduced rate for men so, we have different experiences with intimacy. especially when we are young as you described...
