So, I think I'm safe in assuming that everyone checks out to see if there's a ring on the left hand, but if you see one do you automatically assume the person is married, even if its not a standard band or wedding ring?

A friends buddy thought my ring was interesting but asked if I was married. The ring is a simple silver ring with Celtic knotwork around a star. I never assumed it gave the impression I'm married, but would it?

No I'd not assume they were married, the same as I would not assume a person not wearing a ring wasn't married.

I find myself asking outright than guessing

You can't go by the ring, because alot of married man don't wear a ring,Then again,I've seen ladies with rings on every finger. I wear a mother's ring on my left hand because it is from my boys and I miss my wedding ring.Lots of people do think I'm married but I'm not.I think if you want to know, then why not just asked....

I wear an antique diamond/silver ring, (which was a gift from me to me), on the middle finger of left hand...reserving the ring finger on left hand for an engagement & wedding ring.

Yep, I agree. Nothing goes on my left ring finger unless its a ring from someone I love. Doesn't feel right to wear just any old ring there and I don't want guys thinking I am married or engaged unless I really am.

to ring or not to ring that is the question

instead of guessing and assuming why not ask and let actions speak for themselves

Always take a look for that. I usually figure if she has a ring on she is either married or she is wearing one so that guys don't hit on her.
