Topic: Depression? | |

I am NOT understanding why so many of my FRIENDS are DEPRESSED? Both of them have GREAT jobs nice homes & just because they are ALONE they are so depressed I mean to the point that they are on medication.......... I mean it would be better to just take vitamins or something GOOD for you! ( LIFE is what YOU make of it!) It's as simple as that people need to appreciate the fact that they have a shower every day, good friends, a bed to sleep in maybe they need to visit the other side of the WORLD where people don't have what we have? Just the fact that i'm HEALTHY & can look around at the beauty of LIFE...........Maybe the fact that the MORE you have the more miserable you are?

Depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in your brain. How much you have or don't have doesn't really make a difference. |

Depression can be caused by chemcial imbalances and even weather. There's other things that can trigger it as well. Sometimes you have to experience something to understand it. |

Maybe you can help them by getting them to work out too.

i have a counselor that calls me every couple of weeks to try to motivate me because i've had problems with depression.
i'm learning ways of coping so that i am not affected so much. but sometimes being alone can cause serious depression. i've never actually had a LTR, and only a couple of short term ones and it can be difficult when you see people around you that have S.O.'s and you don't. i'm learning to recognize when my mind goes to that place and i start sinking inside, and i immediately make my mind think of other things. yes, exercise can help relieve the feelings of depression, but sometimes the causes of the depression are very real situations and exercising may not make those go away. for me, i'm not happy about my physical appearance and exercise is a very plausible solution for relieving my depression, but not everyone has a catalyst that can be so easily identified. deb, i hope your friends find some way of remedying what it is that is causing their depression. . . . |

Well I consider you one of my friends...........I used to be a size 18 I was so unhealthy & I was on blood pressure meds, my blood sugar was too high I was on alot of medication........most of my FAMILY all the relatives are over weight. I changed that for myself now I only have pain meds for my knee when I really need it I am very healthy it does take dedication, determination, go to a nutrition shop study the things you need to make you healthy I take supplements that are natural & pomegranate extract every day just do Cardio at least 5 times a week lotta protein & most of all don't give up! I sweat like 3 hrs a day when I workout hard which I love it takes time because we didn't get that way over night so just don't get discouraged maybe just loose 1 or 2 lbs a week! |

Maybe you can help them by getting them to work out too. It doesn't really matter if that's what you believe. It's just how it is. A good doctor uses medication to keep the patient from drowning. Medication should only be used along with therapy, because medication doesn't fix everything. The idea is to get your head above water, and then stop taking medication, while still having therapy. |

I take medication for my derpression, but still struggle with it everyday.
In some of us its a brain imbalance, so it doesnt matter how much land we own, cars we have, houses, ect....it still plagues us. I wish I could just wake up super happy everyday.... but the reality is that I dont. But I give it a damn good try to have a good day anyways. |

Depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in your brain. How much you have or don't have doesn't really make a difference. I would debate this point slightly... once characteristic of depression is a "chemical imbalance within the brain" - but modern medicine has yet to prove if the imbalance is the root cause - or if their is an underlying issue that is causing the imbalance. Mental health is much like physical or spiritual health, it must be maintained to be "good". Lack of phycical or spiritual health can cause mental health issues (i.e. like depression)... I for one am not so quick to push it aside as a simple chemical imbalance... Many of us forget to do things that make us mentally "feel good". So many influences in modern society are driven by fear, anger and greed - which are all detrimental to the mental health well being of an individual (well, unless you are a true sadist - in which case those things would bring you pleasure)... It's a multi-faceted and very individual issue - which is real, but surely is not so easy as a simple "chemical imbalance"... One must activly seek activities that promote good mental health just as much as physical or spiritual... even when they are on depression meds... a pill cannot fix a person... they do help, but it's not a "fix"... $.02 |

A person's mind is a complex thing. Regardless of how much someone may or may not have, many times all it takes is one slight thing to throw that person in a funk. There are many different contributing factors, chemical imbalance, environment, etc. There are many people out there, myself included, who battle depression and simply do NOT know why they feel the way they feel. Your friends may be dealing with underlying feelings that they are not capable of expressing, and that in itself can become problematic to a person's mental health. There is no one solution for dealing with depression, or bi-polar disorder, or any other mental health issue. Its trial and error, and the important thing is that your friends get the help and support they need in order to cope.
The biggest thing to remember, though: When it comes to helping a friend deal with any type of mental health issues, assumption is the mother of all f*&% ups. By assuming someone is making a situation worse than it really is or looking for attention is belittling your friend's feelings. |

Thank you for your response. I battle depression as well, and this whole forum was a bit ummmm disturbing; as if we chose to be this way. But it's typical reactions for people to say, just snap out of it, embrace life. When you actually have hereditary factors, bad genes, and chemical imbalances, a lot of it can be out of our hands as you know. Good luck in your battle. And to you as well I believe it is just difficult for people who have not experienced it to understand. From an outsider's perspective, my life probably seems pretty good compared to many unfortunate people out there. So they sometimes think its just a matter of, it'll pass, get over it, focus on the good, etc. I've been in this fight for 12 years, and trust me, if I could snap out of it, I would. I think if some folks would take the time to get the facts, or even just ask questions of someone who deals with these things, understanding may come to those who seem to be dismissive. On a more personal note, I know the value of a good listener, and pride myself on being one, so if you ever need someone to talk to, I am here |

I'm gonna have to agree with the excercise solution. Some might say at first a mind altering substance like drugs or alcohol, but as good as they may be, they come with a price to your health, and last only for a little while. Excerise gets your brain and body to release its own "drug" in the form of endorphins, and in the long run, you are better off for it, in your health, and how you feel.
