THE LARGEST SPILLS IN HISTORY

The public did not pay much attention to oil spills until in 1967, when one supertanker, TORREY CANYON, ran aground on Pollard Rock off the coast of England. A lever left in the wrong position caused the helmsman to lose control of the ship. The captain tried to stop the ship but it was too late. Once a supertanker starts moving, it is difficult to stop and getting it to turn..

The TORREY CANYON plowed into Pollard Rock at a high speed. More than 500,000 barrels of oil spilled into the sea. This oil spill polluted the coast of England, France and Spain.

The TORREY CANYON disaster made headlines around the world. Legislation governing oil tankers carried oil was passed after the crash.

THE TORREY CANYON SPILL

There have been several major oil spills after the EXXON VALDEZ spill and TORREY CANYON disaster.

One of the two largest oil spills in history occurred in 1979 which did not involved an oil tanker. The IXTOC 1 oil well, located in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico accidentally sank its drill into an underwater oil reservoir. 140 million gallons of oil came bursting into the gulf.
(This one leaked for 10 months until they drilled a relief well.)

Another equally large spill occurred in 1991. During the Persian Gulf War, the Iraqi army dumped hundreds of thousands of gallons of oil from a loading dock in Kuwait into the Persian gulf. They also dumped contents of several supertankers into the gulf. This oil spill was comparable to the IXTOC 1 disaster and dwarf all other oil spills in history.

The estimates of the size of the spill turned out to be wrong. It was a nasty oil spill because it was deliberately done and Iraqi soldiers later set fire to a portion of the oil slick.

England was struck again by oil diaster in 1979. The supertanekr AMOCO CADIZ ran aground in the English Channel. Nearly 70 million gallons of oil were dumped into the waters, six times more than the EXXON VALDEX spill.

In 1969, there was an oil well blowout similar to IXTON 1. PLATFORM A in the Santa Barbara (California) Channel released four million tons of oil into the water.

Another major spills took place in 1957 when TAMPICO MARU crashed into the coast of Mexico. It released 2.7 million gallons of oil into the sea.

In 22 July 1991, a Japanese fish-processing ship collided with a Chinese freighter off the coast of Washington, in the northwestern United States. One person was killed and 100,000 gallons of oil poured into the Pacific Ocean.

Every oil spill is a potential disaster. The EXXON VALDEZ and AMOCO CADIZ oil spills were as large as the IXTOC 1 and the PERSIAN GULF spills. What matters in an oil spill is what happens after it is spilled. It is in the aftermath of an oil spill that the real disaster occurs.

This oil will not be the end of the world but it will be hard on our southern coast. People who survive off the ocean there are really going to be hurting from this disaster.

The aftermath of the Santa Barbra oil Spill was still felt all the way into the late 1980s. As A kid we had to carry a gas can in the car to clean our feet from walking on the beach.

Bio Fuels are so much less polluting! the whole Carbon consciousness movement is a load of crap because who is funding it behind the scenes? Big Oil!

The current oil spill in the gulf is really three well heads that are leaking not just one! This disaster is poised to actually kill off 1/4 of our existing coast line. BP has been spinning the disaster as not being as bad as it really is. Plus they got a huge insurance payout.

I wonder how long it is going to take America to embrace Bio Fuels over Fossil Fuels?

Actually I don't think it is enough QUITE yet. Notice how gas prices after this disaster have not gone up? Usually they do so that big oil can offset the costs of fixing their damage and not affect their profit margins.

If Obama had ANY balls at all he would have imposed a $1,000,000,000 a day penalty for every day that oil leak is allowed to continue. But who do you think he owes a favor to for his election? Had gas Prices gone up to $4.75 right after this disaster? Big Oil knew that would spell their doom. Actually wait for fuel prices to creep up later this year when they think we have forgotten about their eff up. Time someone had the nuggets to fine the living crap out of them for this eff up. Too bad it isn't Obama!

In reality I am betting that we are going to see a serious die off in the oceans there. Entire portions of the Eco System are already getting choked off by oil. Mark my words, food prices are about to really go up on us! Unemployment is going to likewise spike badly in several states thanks to fishing fleets being forced to sit idle becasue their fishing grounds are dead. This disaster is going to linger almost 30 years if not more!!!

Vegetable oil and Alcohol are both bio degradable. When burned they leave FAR less pollution behind! And likewise do not require drilling for oil in places that when you have a disaster like this you don't get stuck with pollution clean up.

Also mark my words...

How much do you want to bet they are going to boast how they made more work for people cleaning up the oil spill they caused with their stupidity! The rig blew up becasue of OPERATOR ERROR! This was not a natural disaster, or act of God. Someone forgot to release the blow out ring on the drill head and they dragged the well pipe far enough to destroy the seal. Then they had a Methane leak thanks to the compromised blow out seal and KABOOM. The oil company have been trying everything they can to save the existing wells rather than to seal them off and drill again. The oil companies are going to spin how they are SO Environmentally conscious again like they did after the Exxon Valdez. It was not just Exxon but this one was one of their pet slogans!

Remember this blast from the past???

"Do People care?

People do."

(NOT!)

Only if they think it will keep them out of trouble!

the only thing scarier than how many people EXPECT/EXPECTED Obama to have the answer for everything

is how many are now believing that Ron Paul (or some other candidate of choice) does

noone,, and I mean NOONE will have the PERFECT Response to every situation,,,,,no matter how you keep campaigning or searching

As soon as they become more practical than fossil fuels. That assumes a free market economy. In reality, the Regime needs the oil economy to reign terror on Arabs and perpetuate the war to pay back the war profiteers. IOW, when the welfare/warfare State is dismantled, we'll have money and time to get around to biofuels and such.

Ron and Rand are very dangerous to this country since they want to take our social progress back to the racist days.

NO candidate has all the answers (unfortunately, a dangerously high amount of people believe this is possible, and are willing to give the Regime dictatorial powers)-which is why the murderous Federal Regime should be stripped of its authority.

Just in case...

I am not bashing Obama for being Obama in this! I do not like him for many reasons. Let me cite another reason I do not like him at all.

I am not going to blame Obama for this mess. Transoceanic and BP both had a responsibility to have a disaster plan in place and the equipment to act. THEY CLEARLY DID NOT AND ADMITTED TO THAT!

Obama should have ordered PAINFULLY expensive fines on them so they would cap the damn well immediately rather than try to keep it working. What does he do? Flowery speeches. Nothing else! His lack of proactive behavior in this speaks volumes! Obama could care less that so far FOUR states are getting hosed by this disaster and soon add Texas and Florida! Obama's answer "Just throw money at it." His answer should have been "Hey BP, for every day that well is gushing you owe us $1,000,000,000 for each day until that well stops leaking! By the way, if you try to get out of this, I am having the marines seize all of your assets in America and the coast guard seize everything you have in our waters. We will keep pumping the oil in lieu of what you owe us and also your refineries will be operated becasue if you attempt to shut us down I will order the arrest of the Board of directors and will order the military to execute your capture. if you don't like it tough! You caused the disaster and now you have to face the music for it! PLUG THAT GOD DAMN LEAK!"

That way we can recoup some of the money owed the tax payer for their eff up. Obama is such a Jimmy Carter part Deux!

Imagine the word 'racist' wasn't in your vocabulary ... or would that render you unable to 'communicate' ... ? If everything is 'racist', then NOTHING is 'racist' ...

frustrated Back to the whole racist issue again!frustrated

Fuque all the social spending!

Less social spending and MORE spending on education! Education is what made us a great nation in the first place!

Government is overstepping the line becasue of all the Social programs that are made to invade our lives! Social spending contributes almost as large a percentage of demand financially on our government as the warS (PLURAL) we are fighting!

On top of that all the power mongers infecting our government use this rhetoric to keep people like you from seeing what really is going on behind the scenes. Why the heck do you think President Eisenhower (And mind you I did not like him as a president but I will give him props for seeing what was going on for what it was!) said "Beware the MILITARY, INDUSTRIAL, COMPLEX?" Because they are a the real globalists and they deal in Human life as if it were a resource! They profit from life and death and have this whole orchestrated and very Machiavellian plan that helps them play puppet master with all of our lives through our government!

"Keep your enemies fighting among themselves so they don't ally against you." That is a direct quote from the Principle of Rule. you sure fall for this one pretty damn good Dragoness... I am not saying your principles are wrong but your conviction is badly misplaced!

You know I got to agree except that Obama has shades of Carter in him as well. Jimmy Carter made a lot of ineffectual promises and never fulfilled them. FDR's spending drove America deeper into the hole and set the stage for crap like what is happening now! Jimmy Carter made way too many bad decisions based on his principles. Obama seems to lack principles other than LIE LIE LIE! Sounds a little like Clinton now does it not?

This is 'Incident Nr 3' for 'The ONE', and his incessant mishandling of everything he touches - with this spill being the worst - will be the reason he gets his asss handed to him twice: First, this November - then again in 2012. Here's a link to an article about James Carville's reaction to 'The ONE's classic inaction ... it's nice to see that his outrage at Obama's incompetence and destruction of Louisiana's coastline (and those of at least three other states) trumps his loyalty to someone who's just one more incompetent political hack ...
