Eighteen Democratic senators have asked the Justice Department to investigate the operator of the Deepwater Horizon offshore drilling rig after the company announced it would dole out $1 billion to shareholders as oil continues to pour into the Gulf of Mexico.

Transocean, according to the letter from the senators, plans to distribute dividends to its stockholders. And the senators are concerned that the payments might make it harder to collect liability payouts related to the massive oil spill.

Transocean, according to the letter, also says it will make a $270 million profit on the insurance policy for the rig. And the senators claim the rig was insured for more than it was worth.

A wide swath of the Democratic Caucus — about 30 percent — signed the letter, including Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley of Oregon, Patrick Leahy of Vermont, Robert Menendez of New Jersey, Byron Dorgan of North Dakota, Tom Harkin of Iowa, Chuck Schumer of New York, Patty Murray of Washington, Bill Nelson of Florida, Mark Pryor and Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas, Mark Udall and Michael Bennet of Colorado, Max Baucus of Montana, Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, Mark Begich of Alaska, Bob Casey of Pennsylvania and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota.

The call for an investigation ramps up tensions between Congress and Transocean. Much of the ire has recently been directed toward BP, which hired Transocean to operate the rig. Transocean might have been unfairly spared, congressional aides say.

BP has alleged that Transocean was responsible for the safe operation of the equipment and has largely dodged blame while the oil giant has taken its lumps.

“Families of those who died in the disaster, the fishing industry that has been devastated by the oil spill and the governments that have worked full time to clean up this spill deserve better,” the senators wrote in the letter

No quick 'fix' to stop it either....and the rabbit hole to who did what and who DIDN'T react fast enough....all will come out. But, where will that leave us the the waters??

Or, is it time?? BB

In politics, NOTHING happens by accident ...

" ... And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.

And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. ... "

Problem here is, it wasn't the 'Spirit of God' that moved ...

Why don't they spend that money on fixing the problem instead of giving it to shareholders?frustrated

If, during hurricane season, that oil is still there it will kill off a very large portion of marine life and the vegetation that sustains the very basic of the animals.

They will be eaten by many more and those too will die.

To many die off and those who wish to see a major reduction in human life will get what they seek.

We could be witnessing a very major "historic" event that could devastate billions of people.

I'd personally like to thank all those responsible and they know who they are.

This, during hurricane season, has the potential to generate multi-species kills as well as human injury from the volatiles in the crude (e.g., benzene) ... Oh - you DO know the price at the pump's gonna go up as a result too, right ... ? How much more effin' insulting can they get ... ?

Funny how the oil slick is red now isn't it?

The saddest thing is the hubris BP and Transocean have shown in actually responding to this issue. they are too damn worried about keeping it productive rather than plug the holes and drill at a new site!

I think the great revolution should be all of us massing up on the comapnies' Executives homes and tearing them down and chasing these bastards across the globe and held to account for killing 1/4 of our coast line!

Because we don't have someone strong enough in the Oval Office to make that happen.

I fail to see any point here besides blaming everyone but ourselves.

There is plenty of blame to go around - and our unsustainable lifestyles are a good place to begin that reflection. Consumerism is the vehicle that keeps our economy, our government, and every other economy in the world that is linked to our own, from collapse.

BP and other mineral suppliers (ie. coal, natural gas, nuclear)provide the energy and materials for 'production' as well as the energy to the consumers with which to travel to theirs points of consumption, or to order the building of a 4,000 SF home in which to store the objects of their consumption, before they tire of it or it goes out of style, at which point it goes to landfills.

In other words the beginning point of consumerism are the energy suppliers. We are the consumers that drive the requrements for that supply and we are consuming at such a pace that corners are cut in effort to save ourselves (and secondary - the world economy) from collapse.

So while the GOP and it's followers have been spouting shouts of non-government involvement in business, let the buyer beware, and laissez faire and ripping apart government entitlments (the redistribution of wealth) they are NOW looking to blame the government for not micro managing everybody elses business.

In fact the same poeple cannot acknowledge the role they have played in this devastating tragedy.

In a year the same people will be spitting leftist obsenities out one side of their mouth and right wing complaints of too much government oversight out the other - but by god they better be careful not turn their back to an open flame - it could be a volitile situation if pent up gas should fail to be properly capped.

Consume buy BeaNo before its all gone, save money and order it from out of country - but let the buyer beware!

They don't, but he sure can stand up to them and try to com up with solutions rather then play the blame game(which he is a master of).
