Hello Music Lovers!
Firstly; this topic would be directed to those who are not familiar with this class of music. What is progressive music ? As it relates to Progressive;and often called "Prog" for short. Was formed in the late 60's. I can give full credit to The Beatles for creating the first concept album.Best example would be "Magical Mystery tour". Some of the music on that particular recording was over the standard three-to-four minute length. Typical time length for the current Pop Music in that era. Progressive Music also entailed a experimental aspect ;turning a bit away from the typical "Polished Commercial Sound"...and to add another Pioneer band to contribute to this was Pink Floyd; However the bands conception was a bit more freestyle, abstract and less structured. Overall Progressive music is sophisticated;has some degree of complexity. Some music was composed in odd time meters versus the common standard four bars to a measure (4/4) time that still exists to date in the modern era of Music. Here are a few prime examples :(Early to Mid 70's period ) RETURN TO FOREVER,YES,Emerson,Lake and Palmer,JETHRO TULL,GENTLE GIANT,HAPPY THE MAN,GONG,KING CRIMSON,P.F.M. ,Frank Zappa,GENESIS,BRAND X-(a sort of underground band Phil Collins formed alongside the GENESIS group attributions). Also a few current examples : KENSO,ON THE VIRG,MARS VOLTA,PRIMUS,DJAM KARET ,PLANET X; of course the total list is almost endless. If you have a interest in any of the Music groups mentioned; I would be very interested to discuss this topic to those like-minded;or perhaps have a interest to expand your knowledge of this music genre. I'm curious if there is anyone into vintage Progressive rock and maybe modern jazz fusion? Some prime examples are found on my Myspace page (Top Friends List ). Same Screen Name. Thanks for taking the time out to read this blog! |

I though the progressive movement was more like Emerson Lake and Palmer, and King Crimson, but I was led to believe it was fundamentally more like a cross between Jazz and (Late 50's (Not bubblegum like but more like something from the Platters)) rock.
I was seriously under the impression Pink Floyd was Psychedelia. I can't even see Primus being considered Progressive. They are Primus and are a genera unto themselves. Nobody plays music so Off tone with chords that just are so wrong and yet they make viable music from the off beat sounds they make. I have seen people call The Residents progressive. Again they are not. They are Avant Gard. Again a wholly distinct style. They made an art of deforming music like Dali did surrealism! Prog as a term is thrown around way too much. Heck, I have even seen Kraftwerke called Progressive when they actually are Minimalistic Electronica. They actually typified a whole movement of music unto themselves. Granted they were not the first to embrace the concepts of minimalism but they made damn good of it! Now some of Zappa was Progressive Jazz! That I can definitely agree with you on! For as much of a musical genius that he was Jazz From Hell sucked so badly I actually threw that album away! I love Zappa otherwise but we all have our off moments. I know people who rave about the technical brilliance of his work in that album but to MY ear it was nothing but a musician with too much time on his hands and his muse was on vacation! The thing is Zappa spanned a group of Genres as well. I bet a lot of music lovers forgotten the Glitter Rocker era of the 70s. That which came before Disco? What arguable wound up becoming disco when black cultural music of the time began to really influence rock like The Supremes? I can easily say Disco was a mix of Glitter Rock and Black Rock! I know this, Music is the one thing that crosses cultural lines without starting wars! |
