I don’t really know
when it happens for
women
or for most men,
but for me;
I remember

it was the first time
I realized I was older
than that month’s
centerfold

it happened twice that year

and in the next,
it was 8 out of 12
months

in the year
to follow
it was everyone of
them
and everyone
since
an odd way to
became aware of
age
and my own
mortality I know,
but life itself
is odd

prior to this
age meant nothing
life seemed
endless


I once ran a
4:18 mile

I was above average
on any court,
any field
and most everything came
easy to me
one time, in a 7 inning
baseball game
i struck-out
18 batters,
but this
was long ago
when age didn’t matter
and now I find
myself
closer to
50
than
20

the mirror that
greets me
and the world that
surrounds me
and the dreams that come
to me
when I am lucky enough to
find sleep
are all telling me
that now,
I am the one
standing there
and it’s the 7th inning
and I am behind
in the count
0 balls and
2 strikes

Funny I didn't notice that until all of them were much younger than me.
Don't let your mortality get the better of you. It's only a state of mind and needn't be anything else nor anything more until you're ready to leave this world.

Excellent piece! Loved it, especially being a baseball fanatic.

Take solace in that many a longball have been launched with an 0-2 count and they're usually game winners in the late innings. That's a hell of a feeling to go out on.

One question though...What'd the other 3 guys do? Don't tell me you don't remember either if you struck out 18! That's one helluva feat!

the other 3?.....well, the first batter of the game grounded to short. In the 5th my best friend popped out to the second baseman. The last batter of the game flew out to our left fielder who caught the ball with his back against the wall…hahaha…(not that it has stayed with me or anything…lmao )
