I know the union was there for me when I needed it.

Only people who have never needed the union spout stupid anti union crap.

The OP is right on with the truth about the majority of hatemongering conservatives.

They walk around spouting rhetoric that they heard all their lives, which makes it old racist crap, and try to pass it off as the "traditional American way" which they are right that racism is part of this countries history but we should have grown a brain since then.

Liberals have fought for many rights taken for granted by people. ONe of them is the right to say the stupid crap they do and not be punished for it.

Oddly enough, I may be conservative, but I am not " anti union ".

What I AM against is the union doing stupid stuff like this.

Our community already has the idea that the people who work in our shop are nothing but a bunch of drunks and druggies. In a small town like this one, that is NOT a good thing to have happen.

But...the union is doing absoutely nothing ( and in this case flat out BLOCKING ) to change that perception.

One GOOD thing about the union I am in is that they leadership KNOWs that our industry is not all that stable. The price of our product is currently at a higher point than it has ever been. We are also due for a new contract this year.

Rather than look at how much the company is making right NOW, the Union leaders ( of the locals anyway ) know that the price is probably going to drop in a couple of years. There are an awful lot of people that want to squeeze every bit of money we possibly can out of the company and damn the consequences later down the road.

The Union has the foresight to know that we need the company to be in business so they will not make unreasonable money and benefit demands. Our union, unlike so many others, isn't willing to price ourselves out of the jobs we have in the future to grab a quick buck now.

For the most part, I like the union. There are a couple of things that I DON'T care for ( such as the seniority system that rewards someone just for being around long enough regardless of their abilities ) but how many people can say they actually agree with EVERYTHING in their workplace?

Well considering that drug abuse is considered a mental health condition, this is what the union is defending. The fact that everyday people have mental health issues and instead of being fired they need help. You can only get into trouble so many times though at the drug level before the union will not help you anymore. To keep your job after a positive drug test you have to go through rehab and drug tests and counseling. If you continue to use after they may give you one more round of rehab and counseling but they will not continue to do it.

No. It doesn't. Maybe for YOUR union it did.

But for the one I am a member of, it doesn't.

There have been MANY instances of people being drunk or abusing drugs on the job there, and the Union has managed to only allow one person to lose their job.

They are only there to " protect " those who actually cause trouble or can't manage to come to work enough to stay out of trouble.

Like I have said before...if you are a person who goes to work every day, doesn't cause trouble, and does your job well....the union will not benefit you nearly as much as people would like you to believe.

I am NEVER put into a position of having to defend a person who fits the above description.

If your workplace is safe; if your children go to school rather than being forced into labor; if you are paid a living wage, including overtime; if you enjoy a 40-hour week and you are allowed to join a union to protect your rights -- you can thank liberals.

Hmmmm...well...the union I am a member of sure didn't " protect "" my rights a week or so ago.

3 people were busted smoking pot on company property...and the union made sure THEY got their jobs back.

What about my RIGHT to be SAFE in my workplace??

That one doesn't count, eh??

As long as THEIR rights are " protected ".

Thanks, Liberals!!!

Idiots.
My contract says drug use on the job is a fireing offence. Have no idea if you even just made this up?

Why in the HELL would I make something like that up???

To what purpose??

The " Code of Conduct " for the company states that drug use on the premises is a fireable offense. It is not, however, written directly into our contract. The only thing in the contract is some fuzzy language about being held to that code of conduct. The union basically uses that language as a way to take any teeth out of the code.

As I pointed out, I am a union steward in the shop where I work.

I know, first hand, how the system works and who it benefits.

Can you say the same??

Unions are there for the disadvantaged. If disadvantaged is drug addiction then it is there for you. If disadvantaged is a sudden onset disease then it is there for you. There is no difference.

So yes my post still stands

So the rights of those who aren't " disadvantaged " have no bearing in what the union should do???

Then what purpose DOES the union have for someone like me?

What good are they doing me?

They obviously aren't too worried about a safe workplace. Otherwise those people would have IMMEDIATELY been put into substance abuse programs.

Like I said, I'm not anti union.

But, I would LOVE for someone to explain to me exactly how the union is benefitting me.
