You're welcome, I know I love those poems! Hi NJ Mom, Do you think you might be able to find out who wrote the poems? We are all so touched and moved by them. I'd like to be able to say who wrote them before sending them to anyone. Maybe you could email the originator and ask them where they came from. Thanks again, My Gen |

If people want to see some great books about and art of special needs kids Look up the name Robert Perske. I would think they are still in print but they go back about 30 years.

Here is another one I stumbled across today, thought it was pretty amazing, too! Enjoy
MY PERFECT CHILD As my children were born, I wanted them to be perfect. When they were babies, I wanted them to smile And be content playing with their toys. I wanted them to be happy And to laugh continually In stead of crying and being demanding. I wanted them to see the beautiful side of life. As they grew older, I wanted them to be giving instead of selfish. I wanted them to skip the terrible twos. I wanted them to stay innocent forever. As they became teen-agers, I wanted them to be obedient and not rebellious, Mannerly and not mouthy. I wanted them to be full of love, Gentle and kind hearted. "Oh, God, give me a child like this" was often my prayer. One day he did. Some call him handicapped... I call him Perfect!! |

i think this is an amazing idea of a group. I'm 17 and have a 16 month old son. i found out back in June that he was epileptic. and now. they're concerned with him being autistic. it's been a long 16 months but its taught me so many things. its great to have a group that's not just for parenting the average child. I have a sister who started having epilepsy seizures at 6 months old . She has been on meds since then to control them . If she does not take her meds the seizures come back . I use the word " MUST " and say you must take her to a specialist because epilepsy is a very serious neurological problem . Good luck and my best wishes to both of you . |

My son is a high functional autistic, with anxiety, ocd, add/adhd, and mild behavioral outbursts. He is only 5 yrs old.
I do have a question, what is a developmental pediatrician job? My son is seen one very 6 months. He also sees a genetic doctor. His autistism is not genetic. |

We just have one for medical appts (immunizations, colds, etc). Does your son get early intervention services? |

Happy Easter!
Hope everyone is doing well. As the worst of winter is fading I hope folks are looking ahead to summer and the needs that will be there for recreation and daycare. Fortuneately there are many great camps for children with special needs but they fill up fast and if you need help to pay for the costs scholarships need to be applied for early. Great places to look for these camps are the National Level of the organizations around your child's primary diagnmosis. Easter Seals, Cerebral Palsy, and Association of Retarded Citizen's, National Amputee Association, Boy/Girl Scouts, and Special Olympics Neman's Cancer camps come to mind to mention a few. Parks and recreation of your city and state also have adapted recreation programs. If one of your child's parents is military there are a few programs through the Exceptional Family Memeber Program. For example Ft.Knox Ky. has a massive athletic program playday. These camps can be a huge boost to your child's self esteem and understanding of possible abilities. It is a physical challenge but the emothional break of being with peers can be a huge releif in a safe and fun environment. Also a real wake up call for parents to see their own need for respite, peer experiences, and looking to the future. |

I talked to my son's former respite provider tonight and she agreed to begin his respite again. We moved out of the area for the last 5 years and I ran into her by chance at the hospital back in December. She gave me her number but I've been waiting til Christopher's seizures were better controlled. She said she'd get back to me in the next few days. It's been almost a year since I had a respite weekend.
