SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Senator Chris Buttars presented his plan for reducing bus routes and making the 12th grade optional.

According to the West Jordan Republican, eliminating the 12th grade in public schools could save the state millions.

Buttars delivered his proposal to an education subcommittee today.

Under his plan, students would get incentives and college credit if they graduate early.

Buttars claims that if certain bus routes and 12th grade were nixed, Utah would save nearly $68 million.

....this came to my attention by my high school senior son who was told by his constantly Obama Bashing government teacher that OBAMA was cutting twelfth grade. It seemed so preposterous(considering OBama had already suggested kids go to school LONGER than the current school year dictates) that I had to look it up myself.

I was correct in figuring this didnt come from OBama,..amazing and infuriating because my son actually thinks that because his teacher is an educator his opinions are logical and well thought out.

In any case, the article is ambiguous,, are we talking ELIMINATING twelfth grade or making it optional which are two different things.

I dont know about Utah but in Ohio and here in Vegas and also in California and Georgia(places where I have relatives or have lived) twelfth grade is already OPTIONAL as it requires only a certain amount of credits (not years) to graduate. I graduated after eleventh grade as my son had the option to as well and my baby cousin most likely will. The issue is though that MOST kids entering twelfth grade are in the 16-18 year old range which is still not legally an adult and usually too emotionally ill prepared to handle a college environment.

Why not eliminate kindergarten? They really don't learn much there.

12th grade was optional??? since when and why wasn't I told of this when I was a senior!!!

I had to go through the 12th grade as did a number of honor role students and the valedictorian. I probly had enough credits to get out early but was told that it wasn't an option... mad

learn something new everyday,,maybe its state by state,, in ohio, georgia, california and florida,,you graduate based upon your credits not how long it takes to get them,,,although you can opt to go over the mandatory credits to attend twelfth grade.

If the present "education system" is so good, WHY do most people starting college now, have to take classes to get them ready to attend college? Think we need to get tougher & DEMAND more, not less.
