New to VA. Try to hit up the nightlife. Talk to people about what you do. And as soon as the girls hear "Sailor" when they ask what you do you almost always get the short blunt, "oh". Where the conversation is soon ended afterwards. You know, we aren't all drunken bafoons with absolutely no self-control! Some of us are just hardworking guys trying to make ends meet.

Yeah it does seem sailors catch a bad rap but there are so many of them out there that are responsible for that. I guess you just need to find someone open minded enough to see past that and want to get to know you. And as for the ladies, damn, just be happy they have a job~

I think its because there are so many of you in this area. You have to be careful on who you hang out with as well. If you are in a group, and just one of you acts a fool, all of you are looked to be the same. Not that its fair, but I'm security in a local bar in Newport News (not far from you), and i see it all the time. Also, I think its can be intimidating to some when you show up in large groups. And like you said...some are over confindent, belligerent d. bags and it gives the rest of you a bad rep. I think for the most part, the sailors that come into the bar where I work at are cool and tip the waitress's well. So they are liked.

Yeah it's lame to be placed in a genre simply due to the reputation of the occupation but I suppose its not completely unexpected. I haven't made it much further than downtown Norfolk as for seeing the place. I actually try not to hang out with to many sailors simply because the groups do get out of control. It's hard when your new to an area to meet people when they've already got you type-casted tho.
