I read a review when Godfather 3 came out that said It wasn't bad enough to be called a bad movie and it wasn't good enough to be called a good movie........ seemed kinda accurate

Actually that is incorrect... David Chase wrote the concept of the Soprano's partially based on his life in NJ...

Conception
Before creating The Sopranos, David Chase had been a television writer for over 20 years.[8][9] He had been employed as a staff writer/producer for several television series (including Kolchak: The Night Stalker, The Rockford Files, I'll Fly Away, and Northern Exposure)[10][11] and had created one short-lived original series, Almost Grown, in 1988.[12][13] Before his success with The Sopranos, Chase had won two Emmy Awards: one in 1980 for writing the TV movie Off the Minnesota Strip, and one in 1978 for his work on the The Rockford Files (shared with fellow producers).[14][15]

The story of The Sopranos was initially conceived as a feature film about "a mobster in therapy having problems with his mother."[12] After some input from his manager, Lloyd Braun, Chase decided to adapt it into a television series.[12] In 1995, Chase signed a development deal with production company Brillstein-Grey and wrote the original pilot script.[9][14][16] Drawing heavily from his personal life and his experiences growing up in New Jersey, Chase has stated that he tried to "apply [his own] family dynamic to mobsters."[17] For instance, the tumultuous relationship between series protagonist Tony Soprano and his mother, Livia, is partially based on Chase's relationship with his own mother.[17] Chase was also in therapy at the time and modeled the character of Dr. Jennifer Melfi after his own psychiatrist.[18] Chase had been fascinated by the Mafia from an early age, having been raised on classic gangster films like The Public Enemy and the crime series The Untouchables as well as witnessing such people growing up. The series was named after high school friends of his.[8][18] Chase thought the Mafia setting would allow him to explore themes such as Italian-American identity and the nature of violence, among many others.[12][16] Chase is Italian-American himself, his original family name being DeCesare.[19]

Oh on an interview in W he said pretty much the same thing
then went on to say how much goodfellas influenced him

he also said to watch for similiar lines in both and how hard he fought to even get the character of carmellas mom played by the same actress. He also mentioned his love for the mob and much of what you printed too!! So what I said was just in addition.

David chase also worked on a rare obscure video entitled "Al Capone". Featuring a video tour of Capones life

He also is good friends with mike imperioli who plays chrissie on the sopranos and
as you can tell in a few (the better ones) episodes has him directing.

David chase also has the largest collection of mob memoribilia in the us

Rainie Caluso. Killed in the 5 th season is acutuLly the name of chases first girlfreind

I know I saw and read his interviews.. Mobsters in general and his fascination gave him the basis for the show...

And what a show it is!!!!

I kinda think it changed cable in a way and helped in the demise of the national networks

but I still say

it was the crappiest ending to a series that was so great I ever saw!!!

If your ever in jersey ya should take the bus tour through the neighborhood!

I stopped watching it in the 5th season and still haven't gotten back to it.. I've heard the ending was not good though.. One of these days I'll order it from Netflix and just watch it.

Love it! Part 2 I consider my favorite of the trilogy, part 3 I could never finish watching. But when I think about it more, I believe I love 1 & 2 the same. Part 2 with the showing of the present and beginning of the Corleone family made it my fav for years, but the first one with Vito, Sonny, and Michael making his transition from war hero to a godfather...good stuff. I love it in the first one when Micheal tells Carlo that he has to answer for Santino. One of my favorite scenes.

Ever watch old gangster movies from the 30s-40s? Like James Cagney in "The Public Enemy,""The Roaring Twenties," and Edward G. Robinson in "Little Ceasar" and Paul Muni in the original "Scarface" from 1931? Also Cagney in "White Heat" from 1949 where he says,"Made it ma! Top of the world!" I love those old movies as much as the mobster/gangster movies of today.

Have you seen Once Upon A Time In America? It's from early 80s and follows kids to adult into their gangster life. Robert DeNiro and James Woods star in it. Seems long and drawn out at first but it's a great movie. A young Jennifer Connelly is in it too.
