Jacob and Esau Bible Story Puzzled Over by Puzzled Lost Fans

By Robert Dougherty

Jacob and Esau is a classic Bible story, detailing how Jacob and Esau are two brothers fighting for their birthright. But for Lost, Jacob and Esau are just two more Bible references to make, and another story of literature to parallel. Jacob's significance on Lost has been speculated for three seasons, as the God-like, unseen leader of the Others. But Jacob was not alone on the island, as the Lost season finale proved. Now, the story of Jacob and Esau may be our only clues for nine months as to who is impersonating the late John Locke.

The Lost season finale didn't begin in 1977 or 2007, but possible in the mid 1800's - when the Black Rock slave ship arrived and the four toed statue was still standing. This event was marked by two men having a typically cryptic conversation - with the one in the white shirt revealed as the long awaited Jacob.

The second man, wearing a black shirt and played by Deadwood actor Titus Welliver, was never revealed by name. All we learned of him was that he has a dim view of humanity, and he wants to find a loophole to kill Jacob. And in the end of the season finale, Lost provided its biggest shock of the night by revealing he had.
The strange, resurrected John Locke was not resurrected - but in fact, was being impersonated by Jacob's long time nemesis. And this unknown man had manipulated Ben Linus all throughout the last few weeks to finally kill Jacob, which he appeared to accomplish.

In the desperate search for clues as to who this shape shifting, vengeful, possibly villainous figure is, Lost fans have searched the Bible story of Jacob and Esau. In the Bible, Jacob is a quiet, intelligent, crafty being, much like Lost's Jacob.

Esau, on the other hand, is an impulsive hunter and gatherer who blames Jacob for stealing his birthright. So Esau tries to get one up on Jacob and take power over him, perhaps like the mystery man did to Lost's Jacob last night.

But the lesson of Jacob and Esau is that it was a battle between two strong, flawed would-be leaders that had to combine their strengths to overcome their weaknesses - a common theme of Lost. Good and evil was often at a blur, as is always the case on Lost. Jacob was the chosen son, but Esau was always lurking behind the scenes - just like the Esau stand in on Lost seems to have always been lurking.

With Jacob's unnamed rival getting a decisive win in the Lost season finale, fans have nine months of Bible studying to figure out if Jacob can rise again. As if this season, with its constant Jesus and religious parallels, didn't drive enough Lost fans to study the Bible when not studying physics.

Maybe, maybe not.

'Lost' fans hope for resolution in final season
By: Hannah Rogers
Posted: 2/5/10

Editor's Note: The following review contains spoilers from "Lost," including the season six premiere episode; the article contains a tag where the spoilers begin.

The numbers, the hatch, the Others, the Dharma Initiative, the smoke monster. Mysteries may be at the very core of ABC's cultural phenomenon "Lost," but the characters are the true driving force behind the success of the series.

For years, I have followed "Lost" religiously and attempted to solve the puzzles presented to me each week. Tuesday night, the final season's first episode premiered, signaling the beginning of the end.

"Lost" follows the story of a group of survivors from the Oceanic Flight 815 crash who find themselves on a mysterious island. The show has been riddled with science-fiction and fantasy mythology since the pilot episode. Throughout the course of six years, viewers have been introduced to some of the smartest story-telling on television today and some of the best ensemble acting in found in any medium.

Spoilers begin here: After last May's season finale, viewers were left wondering not only if the hydrogen bomb detonated, but if the final season would conclude the series in a satisfying way. If the first episode of season six is an indicator, it seems as if the creators of "Lost" know how to end their story.

The season premiere picked-up where the season five finale left the audience and then seemingly revealed Daniel Faraday's (Jeremy Davies) plan had worked - Oceanic Flight 815 never crashed on the island.

However, after the opening sequence the audience saw another reality, one where everything that happened from the first five seasons still existed - only the islanders who had been stuck in 1977 were somehow transported into the present.

Though in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the producers promised the purpose behind showing both scenarios will be revealed in time, viewers are currently left to ponder the implications behind these two parallel worlds.

The world following the characters as if the plane never crashed had changes in continuity from the pilot episode. Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick) was on the plane, Shannon (Maggie Grace) stayed in Australia and the island had sunk sometime in the past. In this world, it seems more than the castaways were affected by their decision to detonate the hydrogen bomb. Are some of the characters, like Ben (Michael Emerson), who were still on the island as children in 1977 when the bomb detonated even alive in this universe? Did the island sink in 1977 or sometime before or after? These questions are sure to be debated for the rest of the season by fans.

Just as new questions were being raised, old ones were being answered, like the nature of the smoke monster. After six long years, fans are finally receiving solutions to the mysteries.

However, the question of exactly who or what the Man in Black and Jacob is still open for interpretation. The survivors and the Others seem to be caught in between the two mysterious characters' ancient struggle. The nature of the battle and who is good or evil is currently unknown - the answers to these mysteries are sure to impact the final arc of the season.

Even though the episode was plot focused and established the tone of the season, it still provided time to further develop the characters in both universes.

In the universe where time was not rebooted, Sawyer (Josh Holloway) tries to save a Juliet (Elizabeth Mitchell) caught between life and death. When he fails, the grief in Holloway's portrayal causes Juliet's death to be one of the most touching in "Lost" history. Sayid (Naveen Andrews), on the verge of dying, expresses hopelessness for his situation and ponders where his soul will go when he is dead. Jack (Matthew Fox) finally realizes he cannot save everyone and finally allows someone else to take control.

The parallel universe in which the plane lands allows new character relationships to be formed that were not possible on the island. A paralyzed Locke (Terry O'Quinn) manages to comfort Jack about his recently deceased father and in return Jack offers Locke a free spinal consult.

"Lost" has once again proved that despite its intricate plots - in this season's case it seems two overlapping (or not) threads will be followed - and large cast of characters, it is still able to hold viewer attention and the characters are still relatable.

The theme of redemption is still ever present throughout the show as the characters grapple with their realities in both universes. Both time lines make it evident that characters are still struggling to find ways to redeem themselves. Perhaps in this alternate time line characters who have previously died, like Juliet, Daniel, Charlotte (Rebecca Mader), Libby (Cynthia Watros) and Michael (Harold Perrineau) can find happiness and resolution in this alternate timeline.

The season premiere heralded in the final days of "Lost," brings with it anticipation, elation and sadness for the day it will finally be over. The pieces of the puzzle are finally fitting together - the adventure is ending, bringing character resolutions and long-awaited answers.

Oh Man Yeah....alot more to digest!!
noway
Now Claire has resurfaced also!

Did you see the repeat freom last week? Did You see Demon Locke's face?

I'm putting more stock in my "demon" theory....

also did you notice some other references ? Sometimes they sneak in things from famous books and movies -and I saw a Rosemary's Baby reference -when after they give the drink to Jack to drink (and he's been through the wringer after having the poison pill in his mouth and getting beat up etc...)he asks what they are giving him to drink and they say "tea" and laugh...which is similar to a line in Rosemary's Baby after she sits down with the Devil worshippers in the movie...frown

"Just plain ol' Lipton's tea" Ruth Gordon says...laugh

I missed the repeat from last week. frustrated

Claire resurfacing is an interesting twist. Showing up in both time-lines or alternate universes, or......??????

This "new" Locke being an evil entity, is a bit strange, but it works for LOST.

I have noticed a lot of hints, some subtle and not so subtle...

Did you notice the date on Claire’s ultrasound film? Oct. 22, 2004 — exactly one month after Oceanic 815 crashed in the original timeline.

Claire’s doctor turned out to be none other than Ethan, the Other who had kidnapped her on the Island with the intention of stealing her baby!
“I just don’t wanna have to stick you with needles if I don’t have to, "...... yeah right

If Ethan's different, it would seem the on-Island Claire is different too.

Was Claire the one who picked up where Rousseau left off setting traps?

What does she plan to do with Jin, who got caught in one?

Did she mean to protect Jin by shooting two Others — or did she even recognize him?

After all, according to Dogen, the Island Claire we knew is gone, claimed by “a darkness.”

And Sayid is not really Sayid?!?

Dogen tried to off him with a pill that looked harmless, but was really poison.

So tell me Holly, what's your take on all this?

ok I missed the sonogram date I'm afraid!noway Ethan was an ob-gyn on the island if I recall....remember? I do- and I think he was even trying to take care of Claire. and Claire resurfacing and shooting and trappng...She may have had to do what she had to out there -or ? dunno..... Maybe her part in the new timeline?

The group that is with Locke on the other side of the island....Is it 1970's? They saw the flairs ....Oh Godslaphead The more I think the more my head hurts~ Yes The poisoned pill....

These Others seem to be keepers of the everything -The healing spring- the protectors of everything against evil....(smoke Monster inscluded) All originating from the Black Rock crash?Possibly?whoa I don't know just throwing these out there!whoa

The facebook fan page had a suggestion that the two time-lines will meet.....hmmmmm

I also noticed that the new timeline people all being nice to one another similar to the way they have on the island...(example-Kate helping Claire while she's in labor) John Locke and Jack in the airport....
etc...

remember?

Ethan worked as a surgeon for the Others. Ethan's wife dies in childbirth and his baby also does not survive which makes him a bit touched in the head.

Ethan generally keeps to himself, however he takes blood samples to determine if Claire is encountering pregnancy issues while compiling the "list" of the survivors.

Ethan kidnaps Charlie and the pregnant Claire for scientific research.

Ethan examines Claire in a Dharma Initiative station, called The Staff. He asks her questions about her pregnancy and injects her with Juliet's serum. Ethan also inserts a remote-activated implant that is later used to trigger nausea and bleeding. He drugs her and tries to convince her to give up her child to him and the Others, stating that they are "good people".

Claire offers to use herself as bait, luring Ethan out of the jungle. When Ethan arrives to take Claire, Locke, Jack, Kate, Sayid and Sawyer run in and tackle him down. Before they are able to extract any answers from him, Charlie shoots Ethan six times, killing him.

Or so we thought?!?

I found this out on a LOST sight...

So many similarities that I wonder if it's a different time line or if it's just a different reality......

Remember the Others surrounding themselves in circles?

There was a TV show called Reaper on the CW. Anyway they used to stand inside a circle, supposedly it kept you safe from the Devil.

It seems the devil is coming, aka the Smoke Monster, aka the copy cat Locke!

Well is Jacob the "good guy" the writers want us to believe? I wonderspock

And why does "smoke man" aka Locke need someone to go with him so he can leave the island?

Who is this little blond kid that looks like Jacob?
Has Jacob been reincarnated?

The names on the cave wall....

What is up with that?!?

I'm still waiting on answers, how about you ?
