Topic: New Year's Traditions ......... | |
---|---|
Okay everyone in different states or country's have traditions for New Years. Whether it be one that some believe will bring good luck or even bad luck and we should not do or should do in order to make our year start off with a bang.
Many parts of the U.S. celebrate the new year by consuming black-eyed peas. These legumes are typically accompanied by either hog jowls or ham. Black-eyed peas and other legumes have been considered good luck in many cultures. The hog, and thus its meat, is considered lucky because it symbolizes prosperity. Cabbage is another "good luck" vegetable that is consumed on New Year's Day by many. Cabbage leaves are also considered a sign of prosperity, being representative of paper currency. In some regions, rice is a lucky food that is eaten on New Year's Day. So today the kids grandmother called me as she has for the last 30 years to tell me to come eat my black eyed peas for good luck within the New Year humm yeppiers had that and cabbage as well this year. Hummmm hey need all the luck I can muster and may go back later and go for it again...... So is it black eyed peas for you as well or do you have another type of food you eat or something you do for luck in the beginning of the New Year? |

In my area it is pork and saurkraut for good luck on New Year's Day!
I started doing this 29 years ago when I moved here. Never thought it worked but last year my luck started changing so maybe it just took awhile to kick in!!! |

no, but i have a question for the past 30yrs for you eating black eye peas for luck, has it actually given you any luck Hummm guess it has not done me any harm. I have always been able to provide for myself and my kids. Even after being laid off for over 9 months now I'm still better off then many out there. So in reality it is all in the frame of mind if it helps are not but it sure can't hurt now can it? |

We have sour kraut pork and dumplings. We got stuffed sour krout! Typical Eastern/Central European tradition, as you mentioned the Lithuanian gf, that just clicks right in! They eat Luhta fish(pickled hearing)
Boom another! We make sandwiches of canned fish (sardines, tuna) as well as eat the marinated herring! |

No food traditions here. I'm trying to convince my children that a New Year's nap is our ancient family tradition though. So far, they're not buying it.
