Janet Napolitano: Clueless About Home Security
Post Date: December 28th, 2009
Submitted By: Josh Painter

I know what he was thinkin'. She's a good one to push his agenda.

When President-elect Barack Obama announced a little over a year ago that Janet Napolitano was his choice to be the head of Homeland Security, it wasn’t just conservatives who were asking, “What was he thinking?” As governor of Arizona, Napolitano’s record wasn’t exactly one which would encourage those with concerns about our nation’s security. Not only had she done nothing to secure her own state’s southern border, but she had a history of fighting the efforts of Tough Sheriff Joe Arpaio, perhaps the only person in elective government in The Grand Canyon State who had actively worked to enforce the nation’s immigration laws.

Before being appointed by Bill Clinton as U.S. Attorney for the district of Arizona in 1993, Napolitano was known for little more than her part in the Democrats’ campaign to try to destroy Clarence Thomas at his confirmation hearings for the U.S. Supreme Court. Napolitano was the lawyer for Anita Hill, the woman who who told a number of bizarre lies under oath in a failed attempt to shoot Thomas down.

Napolitano was elected to the office of Arizona Attorney General in 1998, but her tenure was focused not on security matters, but on consumer protection issues instead. She won Arizona’s gubernatorial election in 2006, and her record as the state’s CEO is mostly unremarkable, save for earning a reputation for being soft on illegal immigration.

There are many who believe that being named Homeland Security chief was Napolitano’s payback for having endorsed Barack Obama for president in January of 2008. She was appointed to the Obama-Biden transition team in November of last year and named Director of Homeland Security in December.

It didn’t take long for the very liberal Napolitano to become a focal point for controversy. In an interview with Germany’s Der Spiegel in March of 2009, she patted herself on the back for her use of the politically correct euphemism “man-caused disasters” in place of the word terrorism. The following month she offended Canada’s government by suggesting in a CBC interview that the 9/11 terrorists entered the U.S. from Canada.

The rookie Homeland Security chief quickly jumped from the frying pan into the fire that same month with the release of a DHS report titled Rightwing Extremism, which was little more than a shoddy and politically-motivated attack on conservatives and military veterans. The report caused such a furor that Napolitano was forced to apologize to the American Legion and other veterans groups. She finally had to withdraw the ill-conceived report.

Having demonstrated early on that she is little more than a political hack who was placed in an administration post critical to the nation’s security, Napolitano recently proved that she has not the slightest idea of what she is doing. After a Nigerian terrorist trained in Yemen by Al Qaeda attempted to blow up an airliner as it landed in Detroit on Christmas Day, the Director of Homeland Security went on “State of the Union” Sunday morning and stunned even CNN’s Candy Crowley by boasting that “the system worked.”

While it was clear to the rest of the world that the system obviously did not work, a clueless Napolitano had to be given a new script by the Obama White House. By the time she made it to “The Today Show” this morning, the HS Czar had to admit that the system hadn’t worked all that well after all. To the contrary, it was a total failure in this instance. To say we dodged a bullet on the approach to Detroit would be a major understatement.

Conservatives and other security-conscious Americans have been calling for Napolitano’s dismissal for months. Now the calls for her to be fired are growing louder, as we hear from National Review and the Washington Examiner. there is even an entire website dedicated to getting her removed from office.

Napolitano’s ineptitude is just one sign of the Obama Administration’s much too laid-back approach to national security. This is the last place where the United States can afford to cut corners or have incompetents in positions of authority. And Janet Napolitano has proven time and time again that she is not competent to run the Department of Homeland Security. It’s well past time for her to go.

Arizona Governor Vetoes Illegal Immigration Bill
Published: June 7, 2006

Gov. Janet Napolitano of Arizona has vetoed a bill that would have punished employers who hire illegal immigrants and authorized the police to arrest illegal immigrants on trespassing charges merely for being in the state.

Ms. Napolitano, a Democrat who is running for a second term and is doing well in public opinion polls, said yesterday in a letter to legislators that parts of the bill would have violated the federal government's power to enforce immigration law under the Constitution and were opposed by many law enforcement groups and leaders in border communities.

Ms. Napolitano said that although she supported holding employers accountable for hiring illegal workers, the bill provided "amnesty" because it let them avoid penalties and fines by simply firing the workers after receiving a warning from the state authorities. She said she opposed charging illegal immigrants with trespassing because law enforcement groups and municipal leaders said it would overwhelm the police.

Ms. Napolitano said the determination of lawmakers to push a bill that she had made clear she would reject "confirms that you view this bill more as a political game than as a serious effort to protect our border."

Ms. Napolitano and the Republican-dominated Legislature have had a contentious relationship. This veto was her 115th — a record for an Arizona governor — since taking office in 2003. None have been overturned.

A spokeswoman for the governor, Jeanine L'Ecuyer, said, however, that 26 of the vetoes involved the same legislation offered multiple times by lawmakers. Some of the bills, Ms. L'Ecuyer said, included what the governor considered outrageous ideas, including one that would allow patrons to carry guns in bars and restaurants.

Arizona, where a majority of illegal immigrants crossing from Mexico enter, is one of several states where lawmakers have passed bills or are considering measures to fill in what they view as gaps in the federal enforcement of immigration law.

Ms. Napolitano has sought to appear tough on border issues while not playing into the hands of hard-line Republican legislators.

Last summer, she declared a state of emergency over border security. Last week, she authorized 300 National Guard troops from her state to participate in President Bush's plan to deploy 6,000 of them to the Mexican border by August to help the Border Patrol.

State Representative Russell Pearce, a Mesa Republican and the immigration bill's chief sponsor, said in an interview after the veto that he would try to put a similar measure on the November ballot.

Mr. Pearce said Ms. Napolitano's veto showed that she was not serious about reducing illegal immigration. "She is the best friend an illegal alien has in this country," Mr. Pearce said.

At least it has some credence.

Or this,

Napolitano Focuses on Immigration Enforcement
Published: August 11, 2009

EL PASO — A day after President Obama announced that legislation to overhaul immigration laws would have to wait until next year, the secretary of homeland security played down the need for change in a speech here and took a tough stance on enforcing current immigration laws.

The secretary, Janet Napolitano, defended the administration’s assertive strategy against illegal immigrants and companies that employ them, relying largely on programs started under President George W. Bush.

That strategy has drawn fire from immigrant groups and many of Mr. Obama’s Hispanic supporters, who say the president has not lived up to campaign promises to ease the pressure on illegal workers and to seek changes in immigration laws that would give more workers visas.

But Ms. Napolitano argued that the Obama administration had changed Mr. Bush’s programs in critical ways, such as putting an emphasis on deporting criminals and holding more employers responsible for hiring illegal workers.

“Make no mistake, our overall approach is very, very different,” she said Tuesday at a conference on border security at the University of Texas, El Paso. “It is more strategic, more cooperative, more multilateral and, in the long run, more effective.”

Ms. Napolitano said security problems on the border were inextricably linked not only to the drug trade, but also to the problem of illegal workers in far-flung cities across the country. The government needs to address illegal immigration at the same time it attacks the Mexican mafias, she said.

Her remarks disappointed advocates for immigrants, who questioned whether increasing enforcement would improve security as much as overhauling immigration laws would.

“How many more millions if not billions of dollars are we going to put into the border without fixing the immigration system?” asked Ali Noorani, executive director of the National Immigration Forum.Joshua Hoyt, executive director of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, said of Ms. Napolitano, “She’s increasing enforcement of laws that President Obama and she have both said are broken, and the result is going to be a lot of human misery.”

Ms. Napolitano and other administration officials have argued that a tough stance on illegal immigration is necessary to convince American voters to accept a wider overhaul that would give legal status to millions of foreigners.

Still, the speech was notable for its lack of a single passage about the positive role many illegal immigrants play in society, a concession that has become standard in most political pronouncements from Democrats on the subject.

Ms. Napolitano pointed to the buildup of federal agents on the border as part of the fight against drug dealers, saying the nation must take advantage of a historic level of cooperation with Mexico under President Felipe Calderón to stamp out organized crime.

This year, she said, the government has seized more than $69 million in drug money, 2.4 million pounds of drugs, 95,000 rounds of ammunition and about 500 assault rifles, far more than last year.

“But border security will not itself stop illegal entrants into our country,” Ms. Napolitano said. “Our border strategy must be combined with better enforcement of the immigration laws within the United States.”

On that score, she pointed out that the Obama administration had outdone the Bush White House. Immigration agents have arrested 181,000 illegal immigrants and deported 215,000 people so far this year. Both figures are double what they were for the same period two years ago, she said.

But Ms. Napolitano said she had shifted the emphasis away from arresting immigrants who have not broken other laws.

Napolitano's priority: Canada border
January 26, 2009

Vulnerabilities along the Canadian border are one of more than a half-dozen priorities identified by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano during her first week, along with cybersecurity and ensuring that federal officials are properly communicating with state and local officials.

"The northern border of the United States has become, since 9/11, important to our national security," Miss Napolitano wrote in an action directive issued Friday.

It appears the Obama Admin has done more about illegal immigration enforcement than the previous Admin.

Twice as much!

Some people on here might remember some of the tiffs a few years ago I had with a member on here who was a legal immigrant who was in favor of illegal immigration. Those threads led to a moratorium on illegal immigration threads.

I also remember the OP who created this thread also starting one a few weeks ago that made a big hoo-haw about how greedy American workers were getting their comeuppance by pricing themselves out a labor market that included illegals who could be contracted to do the work at a LOT lower price.

We report. You decide.

I just moved from az a year and a half ago and i know what she was doing there . it was in her interest to give lip service to a lot of things like the illegals . the part about her ordering ICE NOT TO RAID LARGE BUSINESSES came from ice its self . the officer told the newspapers about being ordered not to raid big business any more .
One more thing something happened during the presidential election that made her and bill richardson turn radical mexicans . I believe it had to do with the Clintons . maybe they wanted to be vice president or something .
It was to bad to . I would of voted for richardson to .but now that he came out in the light it well never happen . I did vote for her in az but never again .
as for as you being an ally I don't want any one to side with me unless you believe in what i'm saying . And I'm not going to research what i say because i don't really care if any one believes what i say . cough up some cash and then i'll research it for you .
