i've searched and searched for this story and couldn't find it..yes i believe it's fake. One poster brought up the point i was going to make...Bush tried the same thing and you bush bots supported it. I for one wouldn't care, when i'm not praying five times a day i'm playing Call of Duty, shutting down the internet wouldn't affect me one bit.

Because Hussein reinstated Baby Bush's patriot act, he already has the power.

The Cybersecurity Act of 2009 (PDF) gives the president the ability to “declare a cybersecurity emergency” and shut down or limit Internet traffic in any “critical” information network “in the interest of national security.” The bill does not define a critical information network or a cybersecurity emergency. That definition would be left to the president.

The bill does not only add to the power of the president. It also grants the Secretary of Commerce “access to all relevant data concerning [critical] networks without regard to any provision of law, regulation, rule, or policy restricting such access.” This means he or she can monitor or access any data on private or public networks without regard to privacy laws.

SEC. 14. PUBLIC–PRIVATE CLEARINGHOUSE.

(a) DESIGNATION.—The Department of Commerce shall serve as the clearinghouse of cybersecurity threat and vulnerability information to Federal government and private sector owned critical infrastructure information systems and networks.

(b) FUNCTIONS.—The Secretary of Commerce—

(1) shall have access to all relevant data concerning such networks without regard to any provision of law, regulation, rule, or policy restricting such access; …

SEC. 18. CYBERSECURITY RESPONSIBILITIES AND AUTHORITY.

The President— …

(2) may declare a cybersecurity emergency and order the limitation or shutdown of Internet traffic to and from any compromised Federal government or United States critical infrastructure information system or network; …

To revoke the patriot act was one of your saviors promises. He kept that promise for about a week, then, decided he might could use it and reinstated it. He almost kept one campaign promise. That's an almost.slaphead

I never could figure out if it was pronounced as:

DUM-A-CRATS or DIM-A-CRATS or DOM-A-CRATS

...oh well...either name fits them to a "T"!

This is hilarious, all the way down to the insult to democrats.

The idea of shutting down the internet was brought up originally during Bush's reign. If they should be able to shut down the internet to stop a terrorist threat somehow. I never understood it then.

Paranoia abounds. Because of the nature of the internet and the fact that it can now be used as a venue for all types of 'homeland security threats', it makes sense to have a system in place to protect it. Noone is talking about shutting it down for the hell of it.

the PA doesn't run out till next year...so till then we'll see what happens, but you do make one good point, which is why i don't look at campaign promises as a reason to vote for someone cause no candidate can uphold his promises, and this is one reason your govt is hated, and the haterade that we ME'ers drink is bi partisan ; )

That might be a good lesson to remember for future elections.
Make them sonnybeaches put in wrting when those promises will git done and if they don't follow through, eject 'em for breach of contract.

How do you like 'em simplistic, distorted and twisted little twinkies.

A 'particular kind of republicans' congratulates 'W' during his reign for the patriot act and all its limitations of personal freedom, and then craps down on the current president for not abolishing that which our infamous kind of republicans celebrated under 'W'.

The depths of human idiocy never ceases to amaze me.

S.773 - Cybersecurity Act of 2009
A bill to ensure the continued free flow of commerce within the United States and with its global trading partners through secure cyber communications, to provide for the continued development and exploitation of the Internet and intranet communications for such purposes, to provide for the development of a cadre of information technology specialists to improve and maintain effective cybersecurity defenses against disruption, and for other purposes

Well, we are all free to interpret it the way we see fit. Seems to me an intent to continue development and protect AGAINST disruption.

But thats just me and my reading comprehension acting crazy again.

Many bills say this or that in their intro or in their summary... Then when you READ them you find many, many things that should not be there.

Power given becomes power used.

Try communicating with someone in Iran when their government feels threatened...

Such as when the people show displeasure with that same government.

But I did READ it. We elect a person in office who hss the power to approve of sending out WMD, the position involves a certain amount of trust that this office is interested in protecting americans. The same thought comes to me when reading this bill,, it is a protection. Could it be misused? of course, along with any number of 'presidential' privileges. That is why we need to choose our leaders wisely.
