I don't believe ignorance is even a legitimate cop out anymore...it's just plain ole self righteousness, and a holier than thou judgment attitude.

I'm sure in the 1930s and 1940s in Germany, you could hear some people say, "Das ist gerade die Art, wie es ist." Always stand up for what you know is right.

oh, and i choose to live in a culturally diverse area, because i absolutely refuse for my children to be raised in a white-washed world...

I have done the same with my children.

I do fight this battle too.

I choose to fight against white prejudice towards all others because I am white and see it and know it.

I think it is a battle fought within all races, cultures, creeds, etc...

Only we can make our world a better place, even if it is one person at a time.

Thats just the way it is, could be used in many situations. I think the OP was talking about a situation when a perceived wrong is pointed out, but I think it is an important detail to include what the QUESTION is in that situation.

For example, if my child asked me about racism, I would feel the responsibility to give them something better to grasp than 'thats just the way it is". If he asked something like,,,if people know its wrong,, why do they still do it,,,,an answer may be harder for me to find and i could explain that is just how it is..but

I would add that it isnt that way everywhere and it doesnt have to stay that way forever. I think a blanket one sentence answer is usually a cop out though.

When you notice a social ill like prejudice ie black folks best not come into the white part of town after dark for fear of their life and you say to someone, "that ain't right" and they tell you "that is just the way it is" and end the conversation as if that ought to be the end of the conversation. Do you think that this is an ignorant cop out or do you think it is people perpetuating prejudice and knowing and not caring?

Some of my family live in places where this is common. I am just appalled by it and get really pissed at my family because I feel they are perpetuating the prejudice when they say this to me.

?????

If 95% of white people had voted for John McCain, would that have been racist?

If 95% of black people had voted for Barack Obama, would that have been racist?

Not necessarily. No way to know if something is racist just by the race of those who do it. motivation and intention would need to be disclosed OR it would need to be shown that in the same situation the decision would have been the same if the race were different. That is, If I had two candidates of roughly the same experience and roughly the same core principles, but I chose the one of my own race(like me),,the argument could be made that my decision appeared to be based or swayed by race.

I think that is pretty ignorant reason to keep doing anything but there are times to be and advocate and times to accept you are not going to change a lot and stirring up trouble is only going to make life miserable for a lot of people and make everyone more resistent.

I am a big believer in doing what you know is morally right and leading by a positive example. It might be a slow progress but it is progress.

It has always bothered me that neighborhoods are segregated. But even having kids go to the same schools there are segregation with in the cliches. Sometimes it is based on money sometimes race.

I was really upset when my son came back from his Navel training pretty much abandoning his multicultural background and beliefs. His wife and inlaws are very bigoted. Which is hard for me to take as a biracial person.
