He who made them at the beginning made them male and female and said, For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate

I think this is what most christians base marriage upon. In my own ceremony , the last line of this passage, was included. Two were made, man and woman, to operate as one,,as God made Adam and Eve.

You describe the taking of a wife/husband.

Marriage is a man made institution and is vastly different from taking a life partner...

For many christians, as myself , marriage is a joining of man to woman. the institution of marriage could be debated endlessly, but marriage itself is a pretty clear cut concept for me, based in my faith.

But yet it contains incest? What about the video...I've posted it on other boards yet not one has ever tried to challenge it's contents because it's exact accoring to the bible...looks to me it's not defined very well at all...so why are religious extremist in the US doing it?

It's just another "hot button" issue the GOP use to rally their "base"...create more fear and loathing.

It contains male female partnering,, which , in the beginning would have HAD to involve incest. It technically would still be incest since the faith believes we come from the same two initial human beings. The difference is, the closeness of the relation, which obviously had to be closer when all that populated the earth were siblings or cousins. It is not much different than speed limit for instance. We are all meant to obey them, but there are special circumstances, such as hospital or emergency vehicles, where the law is suspended. The same were true for those who INITIALLY populated the earth but it doesnt alleviate the rules for the rest of us.

You're losing me...lol...what does that mean?...and whose law? Is (your interpretion of) "God's law" meant to be in US Constitutional law?

Also in the video men were allowed to have many wives...why not now? Not that I need the drama but just wondering why only one bible based marriage interpretation is now acceptable over all the various ones displayed in the video.

Well, I was originally posting about my faith, so I was referring to the laws set down by Jesus as to what is pleasing to GOD. We follow constitutional law, but some of us also follow Gods laws and there are similarities in the fact that some of those laws basically required exception. Traffic laws have exceptions in cases where lives are at stake. Gods law had an initial exception for the advancement of the population.

As to the many wives,,this is true of many cultures then and now. I dont know anywhere in the Bible where God either commanded it or denounced it but he did state plainly that he made two to become one,,,not three, four, five,,etc,, and in several places it is encouraged to have but one wife.

Because I see these questions often in this forum, I just want to add that I believe the Bible is a historical account of not ONLY gods laws but mans laws. There are many things going on in the bible because it is an account of that time in history, but I dont believe because they are included in the Bible, they are all pleasing to God. I take my example, as best I can, directly from the life and teachings of Jesus and not the people he lived amongst , many of whom were complicit in his crucifixion. Man is not my example, but Jesus is and I am particularly prone to follow his sermon on the mount and Gods commandments.
