Topic: Want to host your own forum at JustSayHi?

We are considering giving users the option to create and host their own
forums here at JustSayHi.com.

Let's say you wanted to create a discussion forum for "Seattle Salsa
Singles". It would be for singles who Salsa and live in Seattle (obv).

The host would have the authority to block and kick people out as well
as edit and delete post.

We think it would be a great way to get some more specific groups
started and owned by those who care.

We're just gauging interest right now, so the feature will not be out
this month.

I care...is it only ONE post an owner can have or maybe a limit to 2 or
3 maybe specific topics???

I wouldnt mind having a sight maybe "Califoria Girls" or something
exactly what would it take to do this?

It's not a post.. it's a forum.

The host owner would manage ALL the posts in the forum they wanted.

For example, if you wanted to host the Video Games forum, you would
manage all the topics in there and have control of that forum.

If you're a Forum Host .. then you would basically be responsible for

- moderating the forum (deleting bad topics, kicking out bad members)
- promoting the forum (on JSH as well as off site)
- keeping it fun

"The host would have the authority to block and kick people out as well
as edit and delete post."

This is the only part that scars me. Since I personally have had
experience with moderators in other sites who abuse their authority.
Just to give you one example:

I was in a forum (general discussion) Called "Love to talk" It was
originally hosted by a girl who was Thai. I was corresponding with her
pretty much on a regular bases. One day she got terribly sick to the
point of being hospitalized so needless to say, she could no longer host
the forum. A guy stepped forward and took over for her. He proceeded to
block me(for no reason what so ever) and a few other guys who were also
posting to her. I complained to the admin. about this . They e-mailed me
back, stating they had no control who blocks who for what reason. Well,
to make a long story short. I managed to get back into the forum once
the girl who was sick came back and I discovered the reason I was
blocked was the guy who took over for her was jealous of me and the
other guys posting to that girl. I am still a member of that site how
ever I do not spend hardly any time there any more. For that reason
pulse others which I will not get into now. So I hope this place doesn't
go that far, other wise, I may not be spending too much time here
either. I just do not like the censorship idea. I hope my fellow members
feel the same way.

Thanks vanchau for listening me.

I can understand your concerns... but...

It's just one forum. If a forum host blocks you, well that is their
right. Obviously, if a forum host is too draconian in his or her
methods, he or she will lose their members.

If we make it so that anyone can create their own forum, then a group of
people could just move to another forum of the same topic.

This tends to balance things out...

I think that Vanchau is doing a superb job of moderating this site.

For the record, I've gone to him with mention of some oddball posts, yet
he did not block the person. I am glad he did, because the complaint of
one person should never be enough to block another.

I might be interested in a Harley Riders & Partners forum myself...

So what's wrong with an abuse button? I see it works quit well in Yahoo.
That way no one person has supreme authority over anyone else. I'm sorry
I just don't trust the idea of a monarchy of a forum.

Remember, I'm not talking about the Just Say Hi forums. Those are
moderated by us and we use the report abuse functions for those.

I'm only talking about the USER FORUMS which are created, managed and
promoted by a single person.

Btw, Paterfan, you can already select photos only in your searches...

So you are saying everything is going to stay pretty much as is exccept
for an exteded portion which will be created by a member of choosing who
will just host a single place? I don't really understand the need for
such a thing. Considering the threads IMHO are going quite well with no
problems that I can see.

But what ever.

I would gladly be a mod for a aquarium hobby forum. I know a few people
on my fish list that have been asking for a forum over doing the email
list. Heck I would be open to giving it a wider title of pets. I have
had large and small furry and scaley pets.

How about a nonsensical forum. Kind of like a Open Forum, or a Speakers
Forum were people can speak there mind about an issue or something going
on were nobody cares. Kind of like what they have in England called
speakers corner. People just getup and say what ever they want and if
people pass by and want to listen fine, if not they just more on.

And oh yeah...I almost forgot to say about the original subject; It
sounds like a pretty cool idea, but I hope the chat room idea isn't off
the table. -=x

Yeah general disscussion maybe but I would put it that you can flame or
cures or what ever thats all. I just really don't see the need for a
privet forum other then someone having their edgo stocked about being a
moderator. What type of topic would be placed? Why can't you just place
any topic you want with having it be a forum? If you want a topic about
pets, then fine. Start a thread about pets. What's the problem? I don't
understand why they need a forum with a moderator about pets for that's
all?

Maybe I'm from freaken Uranus or something but I just don't see the need
to do that. Maybe someone can inlighten me?

I think it would be a good idea. It tends to bring people of like minds
together.
For instance, I like poker and a poker forum would allow players to talk
about it without boring the pants off the non-players.

It's not about ego. It's about creating a space for people that want to
connect on very specific subjects.

Poker, pets, whatever.

We're also going to tie it to people's interest.

So if you put in your profile that you like "poker", then when you click
on that, it will show other people that like "poker" and also have a
link to the "poker" only forum for you to talk in.

Some people really want to talk a lot about poker, so why not let them?

For people that want to just stay in the main JustSayHi forums, that's
ok too...

Remember, as we grow and grow, there is going to be LOTS of people
here.. millions... so we have to think about the future and how we'll
manage all that activity.
