Here in Canada the conservative right is called "Progressive Conservative Party". They felt too self-conscious about being right-wing.

This was picked up on by a mini-series, a Francophone-Canadian production, a spoof on politics. Really funny six-part series. The guy, a born loser, becomes Prime Minister (Canada's equivalent to Presiden of the United States, or Queen of England) while being a parliamentary delegate in the "Extreme Middle-Groudn party of Canada". Canadians, by the way, also pride themselves of being middle-of-the-road, indecisive dullards. "Why did the Canadian cross the road?" "?" "To get to the middle." "Why don't Canadians sit on the fence?" "?" "Because they can't decide which fence to sit on."
