In the 1840s the potato crops failed for 3 years running here in
Ireland. Despite the hunger that the Irish suffered the English gentry
exported all spare grains and cattle to England.
American relatives collected what they could to send it over to the
suffering people.
The English, ruling Ireland, refused to feed the starving population.
Only when the pressure from outside became too great they consented, but
they would only feed the ones that would change their faith from Roman
Catholic to the Anglican Church.
Others were given the money for the passage to America on so called
famine ships. Half of these travelers never got to see Ellis Island.
In these 3 years of the famine hundreds of thousands of the Irish
perished.
Many, many of them, homeless, with no possessions, died on the side of
the road, their mouthes green from trying to eat grass.
