EDIT: and I never carried a weapon. If you have a weapon you're more likely to allow yourself to get in a situation where you need one.

I agree with this, strongly. I hesitated to say this earlier because I didn't want to be responsible for influencing someone I don't know, in this area. In my personal experience, I would say that I'm better able to control situations of conflict if I'm unarmed, then if I'm armed.

Everyone is different, you should do what you feel is right, and own your own decisions.

boy I wish ida thought of holdin up the six pack.. I bet it coulda saved hours of walking....
I'm on the fence w the weapon idea... I started out carrying aknife.. VERY useful for so many uses outside of defense.. I believe it saved my life once.. Later I carried a very small 5 shot mini revolver... Absolutely useless for anything but defense and never used it for anything... Also if picked up a reasonable (non crazy looking) knife can be explained as a tool... Guns are hard to convince an officer ur not up to no good.. But I'd carry both if I go out into the wild yonder ever again..

Very true.

Guns are hard to convince an officer ur not up to no good..

Thats too bad. I once saw a large group of cops go apeshit on this young black guy, who was being totally calm, non-aggressive. He was already fully restrained (couldn't see the cuffs, but his arms were behind his back and he was just standing there, immobile, sandwiched by officers). Another officer had pulled out his gun and shoved it against the black guys face, pushing it into his cheek and forcing his head back. About thirty or fourty of us bystanders gathered round, giving 30' or so of space, keeping the cell-phone video cameras rolling and waiting to see what they would do.

The officers were clearly uncomfortable with the gathering crowd, and one of them came over and started screaming at us, in a freaked out defensive tone "He had a gun in his car! He had a gun in his car!"

I'm thinking - so freaking what? We have a legal right to bear arms. Good for him!

All I'm saying is - it looks to me like some cops really freak out about private citizens carrying guns.

------------
As far as carrying a weapon while hitching, I see good arguments for both sides.

If it was the 60's & early 70's I would say to have a good time. But these days you could end up in someone's basement in leg irons.sad2

The only things that have changed is More advanced Police tacticts and tools more offenders get caught... and the media Blowing everything out of scope for ratings.. yes it has become more acceptable to be honest and in the open on what used to be Taboo.. but if you honestly beleive human nature has changed i disagree strongly..

I agree I have a Concealed carry permit and am quite confident in my safety and ability to protect endandered innocents should the sitation arise... the police dont seem to like it much but i have my rights and its clearly written on my drivers liscense and i respectfully make them aware of its existance before they get my id

My friend got murdered taking a free ride in our own state.
Found her naked on the side of the road.
I don't intend the same to happen to me.

If it does... oops, ****.

Thank you all, sincerely, for the help and advice.

The best advice I can give is not to do it...I would hope that you already have a plan in mind of what to do. This trip will take at least a couple days...Good luck

Forget hitchhiking.Catch a freight train and you will get there a lot faster and safer.Just make sure you know where it is going and make sure you don't end up riding it in the 8 mile long Cascade tunnel in the Cascade mountains in Washington state. You won't make it to the other end alive. Some of the grain cars have little cubby holes you can crawl into and it's not too bad of a ride.If you get a slow moving freight train heading into a curve with 4 or more locomotives you can hop on the last locomotive when the lead unit goes into a curve and they can't see you and ride it until they have a crew change or it heads into the yard.Trains go a lot of places cars can't go.Some beautiful country out there. The winter time is a bad time to travel as you can freeze to death going 50mph for sometimes up to 10 hours and that is no fun if you are under trailer with little protection from the wind.Auto racks carrying new cars are nearly impossible to get into but if you are able to get inside, the keys to open the doors are usually behind the license plate and you can enjoy your ride in the comfort of a new car.

As far as hitchiking I used to pick up hitchikers now and then but I think it's a bad idea as people are just to weird and un trusting now days. Many times they don't want to get out or get upset when you can't take them 30 miles to go to the next town.

Saw something similar to this in seattle. Cops are getting kinda out of hand. I agree---Gun in car --Big deal! They never got shot at!
