Teeth Whitening is all the rage now with numerous products for sale. My dentist said that these products cause damage to the teeth and professional whitening will NOT damage the teeth. His staff have almost neon white teeth. Anyway the price a dentist's charges is $500.00. Is this too high of a price?

I've been hearing that the over the counter teeth whiteners make people's teeth more sensitive.

As bee said, of course they're going to say that, they will lose money. If a lot of these products damaged your teeth, you would more than likely hear about at least some of it. My suggestion is whatever product you're thinking about using...google it. Look it up on at least three different sites to find the exact ingredients, what they are and how they work, and any risks they might have.

True. With anything, different people are going to have different reactions/results.

This has some good information:

I did try a box of it a few years ago. I didn't have any problems with using one box.

They might have been using a bad one, or excessively, though I could be wrong, don't know their personal situation, but yeah, that is bad.flowerforyou

As I said earlier though, check the product out thoroughly before trying it, then use it carefully and keep checking for reactions or any negative effects it might be causing. I use one from time to time and have had no adverse affects at all, and it seems to work pretty well.

Somehow putting chemicals on teeth to make them white just sounds like a bad idea to me. For your teeth, gums, mouth, and body in general. Bleaching agents shouldn't be good for the body. I think I would be worried about mouth cancers or stomache ulcers.

If what you are eating or smoking is discoloring your teeth how about modifying what your putting in your mouth? Or rinseing and brushing your teeth?

I don't know a lot about teeth but sure seems like they are awefully porius and you are flushing it right into the core of the tooth where nerves or the blood stream would be absorbing it. Pumping all that stuff through your heart and kidneys ect. Yikes.

For someone who has suffered dental problems all my life that are horendousely expensive and painful in a major way I would warn people to worry less about the cosmetic appearance and worry about not damageing the teeth or so forth. Spend the money on a healthy diet and good dental care. Maybe sealants.

I don't know where neon white would be appealing anyway. Yuck. Roll over at night and see teeth glowing at you in the dark. That is a picture for Halloween if there ever was one.

Haha, yes I guess the neon white is a bit much. I take excellent care of my teeth, but smoking takes its toll. I do not have to worry about smoking now. flowerforyou

Just use hydrogen peroxide on your teeth unless they are using laser.

They did not mention laser, they just said there treatment did not harm the teeth, now I will look up laser for teeth.

Yea I am pretty sure smoking as a teenager pretty much ruined my teeth. That and several traumas to the mouth as a kid and a mom with a special needs kid.

You could also spend a lot of money on crowns. They dont discolour.

Now see, I've always heard putting peroxide in your mouth was harmful, although I used to do that at two different times when I had an abcess and couldn't get to the dentist right away. It worked great for the infection, and I never had any reaction or bad things happen from that either.

I think, like with anything, there can be points for and against, it kind of comes down to a personal preference, what you can tolerate, what you are willing to risk and to what point, and a little bit of trial and error.

I think they take part of your tooth away and then put a crown on. That is scarey surprised surprised
