Do NOT tell her you want a second date if you really don't.

Lots of good advice here, my friend, so please heed. Definitely do not dive into the cologne bottle. Smell nice...not like the health & beauty department at Nordstrom's. Smile...keep it honest...don't talk about the last relationship...it's a date...it's about HER and you! Don't commit or show interest in a second date until toward the end of the date...let things evolve. Read body language...is she into you?
Don't be cheap and don't be extravagant. Go with the idea of having fun...and making it fun for her!
Have a phase two part of the date iof time and her interests permit...dinner, then dancing, music, jazz club...have something in mind but about her interests during drinks/dinner. Enjoy!

A shower or bath is required before you show up-non negotiable/dealbreaker.

Cash-Credit Card-Checks- Have all forms of payment on your person

Have a plan- We are going to meet for lunch/dinner and then go to do
X, Y, Z,.

This is just a date, its not the first and it won't be the last.
It's not a job interview, or pre-screening with family for marriage.

She is possibly just as anxious or nervous as you are and can easily for spooked off. Be on your best behavior.

Clean clothes, clean car, be comfortable in your clothes too.

Be confident, she already said "Yes" to the date, you got something going on.

Try your clothes on the day before and make sure they are fresh and in good condition. You don't want to be trying to sew on a button at the last minute. Or thinking about the hole in your sock. Polish your shoes and or replace the laces. Especially if you are wearing your favorite "tennis" shoes. You don't want your hands smelling of your shoes.

If you have kids that you have to have a sitter for confirm your arrangement early in the day to allow to call in a back up.

If you are going after work take a change of shirts that match your tie so you are "fresh". A touch up shave isn't a bad idea. Five o'clock shadow isn't as sexy as they try to make it look in the magazines.

Drop and email confirming the date and time. With so many people no shows if a guy doesn't make it clear he is going to show sometimes the gals will not bother.

Turn your pager off or at least on vibrate.

Reread your previous mail and her profile maybe even posts. You don't ask the questions you already know the answers to.

We are rooting for you to have a great date. ^5 for making the effort to ask. Shows a good attitude.

Do not talk about your ex and go on and on about your divorce.
This is a huge turn off for me anyway.

Meet her at a restaraunt YOU choose.

Be on time.

Don't get drunk. One drink or two tops in a three hour period.

Don't talk about your ex(es).

Kiss her if she wants to, and you want to.

Send her flowers to ask her out on date two, but ONLY if there were sparks on date one. Don't buy her gifts or do grand gestures. That is setting you up for failure.

take her advice (she's had a lot of 'odd' first dates - to say the least. laugh

i'd add to that - ensure that YOU fund the date entirely. (i don't care how sexist that makes me sound)

One thing that is a pet peeve is stopping to get gasoline on a date.

Unless you live 200 miles from your date show up with enough gas to get to the date and at least get her home if she is riding with you before you have to stop in. Same for stopping for smokes or bathroom breaks in gas station. Seems like you are fishing for gas money.
