Hats

Oh, they could turn an eye,
such style to cause a stir,
All gussied up in their colorful regalia,
starched, ironed, clean, smelling so good.
Children fed, houses in order from the week
spent in preparin for Sunday.
New dresses, hand sewn,
gloves and a hat to match.
Children spit shined in their crisp and clean,
at least for the moment.
Recipes shared, lunch ready
for the men, waitin, droolin.
Did you hear..Have you tried..It's such a shame..
I never would've believed?
That long invisible cord that wound
In and about the town, in every home.
Now they call it cordless phones.
Suppers sent to the needing
from a gaggle of beauties congregating
in the church kitchen,
the choir and Sunday School Classes,
Like a swoop of beautiful feathers and bows.
They could turn heads, alright,
Yes, I think hats should come back.

It is warm and a gentle breeze, here..so quiet, no cars and at 3, the children fill the town with energy and laughter. For a wink until supper, even the dogs laugh.
