ADD and ADHD are basiclly a wide range of behaviors and cognitive abilities with a wide range of what people will define as abnormal. Sadly it is most often diagnosed by overwhelmed parents and or teachers who can not cope with yet another highly demanding distractable child in and over crowded class room. While diagnostic tests are developeing it is mostly by observation or after the child has had a series of accidents that point out a child is not functioning like siblings or peers. Predominately it is a child who is easily distracted, has conceptual deficiets, memory immmaturity, and is extreamly busy or into whatever they are doing as if the world does not exist beyond them. The child is often very smart and very frustrated by chronic failure. It is more commonely diagnosed in boys but females do have both conditions. Being "on" or coming off of Ritalin is something the child is very aware of. If behavior is worse off the medication during family and sleep time those relationships will suffer.
Sadly some people take a singular approach at treatment which my experience put a kid on a medication roller coaster that sets them up for drug abuse and second generation failed family relationships. For some accute cases drugs are necessary but most often they are over prescribed poorly administered and done before other problems are addressed. Both conditions are better treated with quality couseling, adapted schooling, a great deal of commitment on the part of parents and siblings and drugs if needed. Most of these drugs are seriously powerful drugs with side effects that need to be closely monitored. Parents will fair better if they find peer parents and adults with the diagnosis for perspective. The good news is the children that have these diagnosis' can do very well and become sucessful adults if they are given lots of love and encouragement to endure the exclusion and ignorance of people who only vaguley are aware of the condition. There are laws to protect you and your child from discrimination and programs to give you guidance and even assistance in careing for your child in your own home. |

Any serious mental problem needs meds and supervision by professionals . If people do not know about a sickness they should not throw any idea around . We learn from each other only if we take things in a serious manner .

And it doesn't necessarily need medication, many people learn to function quite well without medication. And unless you are on medication, it doesn't need supervision by a professional. It's also not a sickness, just a little glitch in the brain. |

since this is parenting children with adhd or really grown ups as well when unmedicated often are inattentive, hyperactive, and often experience problems with behavior and academics.
In the classroom your child will have problems sitting through long lectures ( the teacher will have to modify their lectures), may want to talk when not appropriate, will often not complete tasks that are to long for him/her, may move a lot, be unable to sit down and study, etc. as someone else said adhd is attention deficite hyper disorder, if you feel that your child has it please take them to their pediatrician and either your pediatrician can help suggest non medicated ways to helping your child or can perscribe medicine for him/ her. Additionally, ADHD in school receives an IEP an individual Educational Plan where for example if your child has problems paying attention and taking notes, the teacher may have your child take as many as possible and then switch her notes with his, or the teacher may break down assignments like giving everyone else all of their work at one time where as with the child she would give him 1 part and then when he finisihed that part let him start on part number 2, etc. |

The problem with meds is that some of them will be addictive since they act on the nervous system . |
