it's just a jumping spider, and they are very observant, quite smart, and very tolerant. they'll take care of many of the creepy crawleys that you don't want..... they are good little girls to have around the house if you don't want german roaches and the like.

I usually, well more than usually do not kill spiders. I either leave them alone or will capture and release them outside. I have only two rules that will merit a spider death sentence: If it crawls into my bed, or if it hisses or charges at me, then it gets the boot.

FINE JOY YOU WIN... but there's no way she could have known it was a jumping spider, she's just a SPAZ!

Besides that it was under the ledge of her back patio wall attempting to eat a bug bigger than it was. It was not very big and I really didn't see that it was physically possible to launch itself out 2 feet vertically and attack me and my blackberry!

Spiders don't scare/bother me unless they happen to be crawling on or biting me!

They can jump further than that.smokin

The redbacked jumping spider (Phidippus johnsoni) is one of the largest and most commonly encountered jumping spiders of western North America. It is not to be confused with the unrelated and highly venomous redback spider (Latrodectus hasselti). When threatened, the redbacked jumping spider can inflict a quite painful bite in self defense, but with no serious medical consequences.

The picture (when I Googled it) showed a large red patch on its back though, so not sure this is the right spider.

There is one in Australia that is highly poisonous.

I thought black widow at first, but don't know if the patch is on their back or underside, may want to Google it to be sure.
Good luck. noway

The Stones in Australia are highly poisonus everything there is highly poisonus dammit, Funnelweb Spider any1?

K so I found this:

Here are some possibilities. I don't know if that is what you killed because some other spiders have red spots. The common jumping spider is black and fuzzy with a red spot on the back of its abdomen.

The northern black widow has a row of red spots located in the middle of its back and two reddish triangles resembling an hourglass on the underside of the abdomen.
The red widow spider has a reddish orange head-thorax and legs with a black abdomen. The abdomen may have a dorsal row of red spots with a yellow border. The red widow lacks a complete hourglass under the abdomen, but may have one or two red spots.

Do a google image search for northern black widow. There are some good pictures there.

I dont know if its true...

It is a common jumping spider--Don't kill it cuz the eat all the bugs around light fixtures and window frames. great little exterminatordrinker smokin

it is SO funny but actually after i read this and posted jokingly about it yesterday...guess who showed up in our house yesterday afternoon?

That's right!! A bold jumper!!

I sure was surprised. Guess it must be bold jumper season!!

laugh

He/she seemed surprised to see me too! surprised

In honor of this thread - and because of my general live and
let live philosophy - not to mention that the bold jumper is
one of those good little spiders - I just said "Hello there
lil fella". And we went about our respective business....
