try linux!!!! do you know how to partition your computer? If you don't want to put linux on, I would think you can reinstall windows. It would only make sense, obviously though you would ned that little code/key. Well I don't know much..infact very little about computers. But you can always google your proble. It helps plenty!! Take care!

What did you computer originally come with? Do you have a license sticker on your computer anywhere (a shiny windows sticker that is relatively thin, usually on the back of the case)? All you should have to do is get ahold of the CD of the original OS and reinstall it with the license key that you *already* have. If that isn't an option I'd say go with Linux, but that can be a tough OS to learn for some people.

You might want to go back to your original OS that came with your computer...apparently it is/was designed to run the original version.

Here is a clip I found that might help clear up the issues of Black Windows:

Read the following:
If I remember correctly, Windows Black Edition is one of cracked, slipstreamed Windows editions that some people or Warez group make and populate around the Internet, usually through Warez and P2P sites. What slipstreamed means is that it already contains a number of software applications that most people find useful, and those applications are usually cracked as well.

Keep in mind though that these editions are all essentially illegal. And more often than not, they contain viruses and/or Trojan horses built into them. The Windows Black Edition in particular has a bad reputation of being unstable, sometimes showing the notorious Blue Screen of Death right after installation. The reason Windows Black has received so much publicity over other slipstreamed versions is, I assume, because of its stylish, Vista-ish look and myriad of customization options.

Hope that answers any questions.

Hate to hear of it...but also keep in mind, NOT to go and invest very much into an older system...just to get it back to what you had before. It CAN "nickel and dime" you to death. I know...with 30 years of building/repairing them...that would be your best advice(unless someone has a better idea)!

The prices are coming down so drastically, I would just "bite the bullet", and get a new/used one that is more up to date! It would be a lot less headache!

Good luck...

Seriously if your computer is old...it can still be used at it's full potential with Linux. I know some people might think it to be a difficult OS, but I tend to disagree. Try ubuntu. Usually if you take linux in college or university your are getting the "business" version. Example: red hat, fedora..hence why you might think it's hard or you dislike it. Anyhow, you should seriously look into it dude! It's actually very very simple... just the GUI is different...ofcourse just like anything else you try that is new, it'll be a little difficult "getting" around. It's community own, so you can constantly get upgrades. Advice for anyone sick of windows viruses ect: TRY LINUX! Although I don't really like the name I doubt you would have a complaint. Instructions and everything on the site...tonnes of forums for newbie ect. Try it out!

Hi Chrissy, you have some good advice...tried it, among others as well. Microsoft will always be a problem(just my opinion)! I finally settled for Windows XP for NON-Internet use, and iMac for all my internet stuff. So, far...no issues. But your right, if people only knew that there are over a hundred different operating systems.

You have a fun/safe/great week ahead. That is a cute baby you have there.

For best results, I would stay away from Ubuntu on really old hardware, though. Might try Xubuntu, Lubuntu, though.

I am using Ubuntu, 9.04 Jaunty.
I personally recommend it. I believe the last good Windows system was 3.1!

thank you for complimenting my son!! It's funny how most people think that windows was the "maker" of computers. Unix based operating systems came about first. Anyways as I think I may have stated earlier I know very little about computers...lol Well take care!

Well usually a beginner linux user's best ebt would be to go with ubuntu is because it's not too much of a different OS than windows. I mean graphically. Well technically I think Xandros would be most like windows...but commercial linux also cost money. Personally I didn't like Xandros. I think after using ubuntu for a little while you could probably go with Gentoo. You I recommend liinux to people who also want to learn. It is something to take your time and learn, when exploring different versions. AnyhowI think I am rambling for no reason except for the fact of rambling. Well take care:)

well you will have to download an ISO file on to a disc. I think it needs a "special" disc. What I really think you should do is browse around for the right operating system first. How much do you know about computers? Like do you know about your hardware and the components? I think it's vital to get all the system requirements before choosing the OS. Well it just requires a bit of reading... ADVICE: Burn a "live" disc of ubuntu and try it out. O yea, you won't be using messenger, that's copyright...you will be using "pidgin". Try and read...look around...ALOT of INFO about Linux on the net...darn I'm talking a lot. Good luck....

You have so many options, it can be confusing. Maybe the simplest thing to do is follow Chrissy's advice:

1) download an copy of Ubunut from this page http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download.

There are three things to choose on that page -
Which version? Leave it at the default - 9.04
Which server? Choose any one in your country. It basically only effects the speed of the download.
'Custom options', 32 or 64? You can leave it at 32.

Download your file, which will end in 'iso' (I think it will be around 700mb).

2) Burn it to a CD.

3) Boot off your CD. (You may need to change seetings in your BIOS, we will help you.)

and will it remove windows black

I think you should take it for a test drive before you install it. If you read the instructions carefully and make the right choices, it will not change your windows installation at all. If you do decide to install it, you will be able to 'dual boot' and have both windows black and ubuntu on your computer (though you can only use one at a time). If you want to get rid of windows black, that will be one of your choices, but I would suggest dual booting.

and will i be able then download msn messenger?

Like Chrissy said, you will have a chat program that works with MSN messenger, but it will have a different name (and will be pre-loaded in the OS).

We will help you!
