I live in a small town of 1280, Long Beach, Washington and I find it has
it advantages and disadvanges. One of the advantages is that is a small
town and everyone knows everyone.
The disadvantag aspect is that we have to drive about 30 miles to a
Safeway or a shopping mall, as our town has only one market and it has
sky hi prices. From May until the end of September we are a tourist
town. From October to May, we go into our non tourist season.
Seattle,Washington is four hours a way and Portland, Oregon is three
hours away.

The reason that I am writing this topic is:" so if you live in a small
town like mine, how do you feel about it'?

I have been to your town during tourist season and love the beach.

I live in a town of about 7,000, and am about 2-1/2 hours and a ferry
ride from Seattle, about 1 hour from Bremerton and Silverdale (malls and
shopping) or 30 miles from Wal-Mart and bigger stores in Sequim. They
work hard to keep this town a mom and pop store town and fight
franchises really hard. Two major grocery stores and 3 gas stations.

Is nice in a way, but we do pay top dollar also when we shop, a lot of
the locals drive to Silverdale or Sequim (Wal-Mart & CostCo) for their
shopping.

It is an artsy community, so that is nice, but would like the
convenience of lower prices at times.

plp -- I live in a town that's just a little bit larger than yours, and
it's nothing short of awful. I've lived here a year and a half and have
yet to meet one person. Everyone here is completely provincial and
exclusionary -- it's VERY rural, and if you and/or your family hasn't
been here 27 generations or more, you're simply dirt.

There are two grocery stores, four gas stations, two hardware stores and
the usual fast food places. A couple of pizza places. The town is nice
to look at, the scenery is amazing, there's a river and some beautiful
old buildings....

But the people....!! I moved here because a friend (who lives in a
nearby town) told me this would be a good, quiet place to work on a
book. She was right about that part, but she never told me about what
the people were like here!

I was expecting Mayberry and I got poison berries.

Reliable sources tell me the only way to ever meet anybody here is in a
bar or a church. I don't drink, and I'm an atheist, so these are not
suitable options. I have been looking at places in a couple other towns
(in one of which I already have some friends), so I am hoping to move in
the near future....

Sorry to hear that Lex, I have cousins here, but don't go out much other
than to work, just the way I am.

I work at the hospital so know people from there and have made some
friends there. The people here are actually fairly friendly. Just be
CAREFUL crossing the road - there are more elderly drivers here than I
have ever seen anywhere, geeezzzz.

The story I heard was that the town was going down the toilet in the 70s
and the "hippies" moved in and saved it from financial ruin. Do see
some "hippie mobiles" running around yet. Huge organic sections in the
markets. Musicians on the streets playing for money, etc. The county
actually has some cabins for the homeless (they are right next to me)
and the county takes pretty good care of the homeless.

All in all it is a pretty friendly place I think. You're right Poet,
though, I do like small towns.

plp....

I live on Long Island, NY. Millions of people...everywhere. Too much
traffic, parkways are like parking lots trying to get home from work at
night. Rush hour traffic lasts for hours here. With the start of the
summer season....it will be sooo much worse.

Give me the peacefulness and tranquility of a small town....any day.

I live in a medium sized Southern town with lots of people coming and
going all the time. It's not my cup of tea, though, as I miss the
Northeast...

I always thought I lived in a small town.
I love my 'city' of 30,000 and wouldn't want it any bigger.
