"Just a cat?"

Some nursing homes have therapy cats that are used to be companions to their elderly residents. Therapy cats are also sometimes used in hospitals to relax children who are staying there. Most therapy animals are usually cats or dogs.

It is proven that therapy animals can work as well as (or better than) conventional pharmaceutical medicine for helping people relax; overall stress levels drop, blood pressure decreases, and the heart rate slows. Some therapy animals have been trained to help their companions in certain situations. Therapy animals can be trained to remind their companion when to take their medicines, or they can call out to other people for help when their companion is in trouble.

So, the next time you feel tempted to say "That darned cat" think again, some of them may turn out to be your threapist....

My ex girlfriend tried that with my cat way back when we were together. The tears, the cat tolerated, the sniffle, and well, my lovable kitten gave her a swift one across the face and left a tiny scar across her cheek.

We have a hospice center here in Pensacola and they have a resident cat. He will usually go into a patients room and not leave their side, as if sensing that their time is coming. So far, everyone that he has visited and stayed with an abnormal amount of time with (other than just visiting and making his rounds) passes away. He will often stay on the bed after the person has left, for about a day, and just sleep. It is almost if he is mourning their loss.

The patients that I spoke with say that if they were not terminal, they would not be there, and find him very comforting.

Animals have an amazing sense of life, death and even illness...
