In the next month or so I may need to receive some faxes, and I don't have a fax machine. I've looked at some fax-to-email services online, and many offer a 'free 30 day trial' - which may be all I need.

Has anyone used any of these services? Which? Are you happy with them?

(Also, has anyone taken advantage of the 'trial' period without being hit with unexpected fine print/fees? )

I think you can receive faxes right into your computer using hyper terminal.....I recall using that ten years ago or so....I don't think you need an outside service ...can't recall all the details..

your computer requires a fax modem to do faxes from the computer. Mine doesn't even have one

go on ahead and get the free trial of efax if you want to do a couple faxes (believe you get two free faxes)- or you can have them scan and send as a pdf to you in e-mail (alot of companies are willig to do this), then you print out, do what you need to do and then use faxzero.com to send a free one back :)

yes I have, in fact several times when I needed to fax something. Saves $1 per paper to fax at office depot or kinkos!

Thanks for your encouragement - I'm always a little unsure about giving my credit card info to online retailers - worried that I may have missed some 'fine print' and will be charged unexpectedly. Turns out there may be some kind of unspecified-amount 'use tax' I may have to pay? I'm sure it will be small.

Anyway, I signed up for efax. I haven't received faxes from others, but instead of having some documents scanned at $3 a page, I faxed them to myself at $1 a page, and efax sent it to my email. I'm happy with the service!

Turns out I needed to use something like this: http://www.splitpdf.net/ to split the fax-to-efax-to-email attachment into separate pages on my machine.

Thank you - I already signed up for efax, but I may give the k7 people a try to.

K7 doesn't need any credit card information whatsoever I don't even think they require your name.


This is how they stay in business and make money:


1. Behind the scenes all telephone providers charge termination rates. It can be as little as .00000021 cents per minute but there is always a charge.

For example let say you have a plan with Verizon that includes unlimited USA calling for 30 bucks a month and you make a call to an AT&T customer. Verizon pays AT&T a termination fee for that call.

The more calls you make on your plan the less Verizon will make.



2. The company that owns K7.net is another telephone company that has a blocks of telephone numbers In both Seattle and just outside Seattle Washington. Since this is a rural area and they don't have many people living over there , the company will give you a free fax to email number. It cost nothing for someone to send you a fax and they still make a small amount of money.


The only requirement K7 has is that you receive at least one fax a month. When you set up your fax to email account hey also give you the option of having a free voice mail account on the same line.


It's a great service and it works out well especially when you have a office full of people that sometimes have to receives faxes at home but don't have fax machines there. Or, even if you have a real fax machine you may want to look at he faxes before printing them and only use your existing fax for sending.

You can also get free fax numbers and phone numbers from numerous other countries as well. Its great for creating a 'global presence' for you company if you have one.


There's also another option. If you don't like fax to email you can also get a free line for your faxes without a monthly fee. But with that option you will need to have a dedicated fax machine at your location.
