Topic: Sickness Will Surely Take The Mind... | |
---|---|
How many believe that mental illness runs in families? I don't know about that... I have a sister who battles depression but it has only been for about the last 15 years since she went through treatment for breast cancer. She was fine before all that. So her and my son are the only ones in my family...that we are aware of. |

2 rules 1. Go to work 2. Take your meds. I wish it were that simple.... I could never understand why some fight the meds...but...from what I've heard, some meds make them feel "run down" or "different"...maybe it's the nature of the disorder that makes them distrust the meds...which then of course, creates the vicious cycle? |

Getting my son on the right meds was a problem..I'm still not sure if we served him well when he was younger and the problems became apparent. He was so young when he started that so many different ones were tried. By the time he was 18 he was an addict, self medicated himself because he had so many different things all up in his system. Now he smokes his pot and seems to do better on that than he did on any pills.. Really hard to watch that go on with your own kid, ya know. |

I think a lot of it is they get either over medicated or under medicated....... it takes time for doctors to find the right drug and the right amount for each person. And honestly I don't think that some doctors take the time that is needed..... |

Ladylid I feel ya!! Been through the same thing She's 28 now. Living on her own with the help of a mental health social worker yeah, tough gig aye? I'm glad your girls doing good. So the worker has constant visits, check in, helps with like jobs, that sort of thing? My boy is still working it through, the last couple of years have gone much better. |

...where minds can't usually go...from "Tommy"...by The Who. I see a lot of profiles stating they don't want to date anyone with any type of mental illness...some even go as far as listing certain pharmaceuticals... This leads me to believe that there MUST be a lot of mentally ill wandering around or it wouldn't be such an issue... So...my questions are: Do you have compassion or disdain towards someone dealing with mental illness...? Has mental illness ever touched your life? Would you dump someone you were dating (& liked) if you found out they were on medication? who is to define the mental illness and really who does not have some bit of mental illness if you lose your temper and yell (could that not be considered a form of mental illness) the only ones that do not have a type of mental illness is the sociopath but that is considered a mental illness any one that feels emotion has a mental illness to a certain degree so those that do not want anyone with any type of mental illness are detined to be alone if they hold true to their want but hey........ |

I have always told my boy that it was him that taught me unconditional love and forgiveness, and it's true. What wonderful gifts, how could I ever not be there for him.. my heart goes out to you and your daughter cause I feel ya. |

I have known 2 people with manic depressive disorder. Both of their moms have it too. It generally runs in families. There were times they were fine and times when they were all over the place. I have never dated anyone with mental illness.

Excellent point, Adj...& the first person to completely understand what I was saying... Seems that terms like Bi-polar, etc. have been used lately as a "blanket" diagnoses...not to take away from a true Bi-polar, or someone suffering from anxiety or depression or whatever... That's why I find it so incredulous when someone posts on their profile that they wouldn't date someone with a mental illness...since I believe we ALL suffer from it from time to time...

It runs on her fathers side of the family
His mom and sister have it. They do quite well actually My baby has it a little more severe She's my bi- polar angel!! |

Maybe we all do to some degree like you say.. but there is a difference between those of us who "have our moments" and those who have their years of struggle, every day, all day long, year after year. Severe depression, suicidal thoughts and or behaviors... different degrees of insanity perhaps. |

If a person with mental problems can control their illness with meds and live a somehow normal life it is okay but if the person shows a dangerous or childish behaviour no one needs them as we all have a life to take care of .We ought to look to what makes US happy and NOT what makes others happy .Of course there are hospitals and other organizations that look after them . I want to have fun and be happy and not look after a sick person .

Who was it that said Only the crazy people think they are sane or blame it on others (like it runs on one side of the family or the other, etc...), while the sane often question their own sanity?
