I have several computers,an XP PC,and ME PC,and a Vista Laptop,I do alot of photography,so I need allllll of them ,Microsoft is smart, the whole idea of Vista was to make the need for the comsumer to BUY new software, but if you are clever, you can do what I have done many a time, lets say you need a PSP9 Vista Patch, that is what you type into your search engine, and if there is a patch out there for it,you will find it that way.(NOTE-a patch is a small program that when doownloaded will allow your ME,XP program to work with Vista, personally, and this is my OP ONLY, Vista sux, keep the ME and the XP,avoid the vista.

I still like 2000. Xp has some nice features but still crashes. It should not take 3GB of ram to just run the operating system....

I read of some tests a couple weeks back where people are running windows 7 using 512mb - even 256mb of ram! lol...When I first put vista on I was running 1gb and it ran decent, but I had lots of lag when opening multiple programs. Now with 3gb, windows 7 is a Breeze and vista can run a heavy MMO game along with some web browsing at the same time. |

I have read some good things but haven't got to play with it yet. |

I hate to say this, but Vista was made as an idiot proof OS. Most people with new pc, back in the XP days would accidentally delete system files and so on, not really knowing what they were doing. Plus the majority of people using the PCs for internet browsing (I would guess around 85% at least) and download all kinds of crap, not to mention to click on all kinds of crap and the "no good people" could easily take advantage of their system through worms, trojans and keylogger viruses. (hell, even the pentagon was hacked, lol) . So vista installed a bunch of security services , user account control and so on (I don't have to mention, these things were already standard on Linux based OS-es 10 years ago or more) So Vista was born , which is really something that was made to focus on security as it's main goal.
The speed and compatibility was sacrificed for security, hence it needs at least 2 Gigs of Memory to run efficiently (if you got more the better) . Now we got Windows 7, which is pretty much Vista on a diet or think of it as an optimized version of Vista or what Vista should have been. I'm not very found of it, although I do say it runs a lot more faster and more efficient than Vista, but still can't match WinXP (with all the updates) if you ask me. And finally if you hold a gun to my head and then ask me which OS would be my prefered choice as the most efficient, most secure and most bang for the buck in one package , then I would probably say "Any free version of Linux". But again, Linux isn't for everyone and it's weak side is still not having various alternatives (like Office or Photoshop) or as some geeks like me , not having a real support for gaming and lacks good driver support for hardware. |

My XP runs great and with the 4 gigs of RAM and 980 gig hard drive space, I have no complaints. I do have AVG Professional for my security issues and it works great as well. I will never willingly give up my XP lol.

Xp is better than Vista, I agree, But Win 7 ROCKS over XP

my point of view on windows is that as long as they charge alot of money for the os that hackers will target it and find the exploits i prefer open source linux over windows any most distros are free of charge and the apps are as well
ubuntu is a really nice very stable distro with updates on a regular basis to keep the system running smoothly and securely and as far as the looks there are so many themes to choose from and to run windows programs in linux use a free app called play on linux to install your favorite games from windows internet explorer on linux as well as direct x and .net services mono for silver light run ms office i have ubuntu on six of my pc at home they never crash never need to reinstall unless the upgrade says to then use the back up or apt on cd feature to reinstall all the current apps and config to the new os version very easy to install found it easier then windows intall and quicker 15 min verses half hour I recommend ubuntu 9.04 oh yeah even windows media player can be installed on linux i stripped the new media player 12 from a beta copy of 7 and ran it |

ummmm the topic is about windows not linux... I stand by my statement, Win XP is much Better than Vista, but WIN 7 blows XP out of the water.

Well as far as security goes, linux and mac are the way to go...all of windows OS's have been hacked - I just hope for the people that bought Vista Ultimate (like myself and many others) that microsoft will come to their senses and offer a deal to get Windows 7 Ultimate for cheap!
I believe Microsoft extended their updates on xp till 2010, they were going to cut that off June 2009 but too many people still use xp and prefer xp. My next computer will be pre-built and have 7 on it! Most xp and vista programs work on 7!! |

Vista is a poor imitation of OS X and it speeds up if you turn off all of the unnecessary features. XP 64X Bit eventually became Vista and it could get past the 4G RAM limitation but a lot of software and hardware does not work with it. Vista is SUPER ANNOYING asking you twice to perform anything.
Yes Vista sucks but in October Ubuntu 10.4 is coming out and that is supposed to be the one version of Linux that will completely compete with XP. I have messed with 9.10 but it had a few issues with legacy support especially with ATI video Cards. Once the last compatibility issues get hammered out Linux Ubuntu will give windows a savage run for the money becasue it is FREE! What makes me laugh is the Mac OS OS-X. It costs just as much as XP and it is Linus Based too! Actually OS-X has a lot in common with Unix but so does Linux. Cheers! |
