Some Docs treat alcoholism as a Benzo deficiency. I am not a fan of continued use in treating addictions. Did plenty of them (Valium) when I was using and drinking.
To prevent seizures from withdrawal short term sure, months later after last drink not such a good idea.

Would using them also put that person in a rollercoaster state, of (appearing) normal one day, the next (sad/depressed), the following (lackluster/no energy) or would this be from the actual addiction.

Could be, as well as just part of being newly clean and sober.
Body and mind go through a lot of changes during this time.

The doctors used to use Librium when detox'ing a patient from alcohol, but not sure if that is their drug of choice now.

Lots of doctors now are very cautious in their prescribing of these drugs and will only use them very short term. The only time I have seen Valium prescribed was for severe muscle spasm (i.e., sciatica or back spasms, etc.), again short term. The doctors appear to be aware of the addictive qualities of the drugs and I have even heard that one of them, don't remember which one, but think it was Xanax, had the same effect on the body as drinking alcohol, so lots prefer not to prescribe it.

Per my neurologist, they have found clonazepam at nighttime to help as a preventative for migraines. It is one of the milder forms of this medication.

The doctors I type for actually refer patients to pain management doctors if they insist they need benzos or long term hard core pain meds, as they are not willing and/or comfortable prescribing these for the patients.

I know that often times benzodiapines are used to treat panic disorder and other anxiety disorders.

Bennies can most definatly be used to help mask symptoms of withdraw, therefor helpin w/ detoxing. My mother was put on morphine,perkoset,and fentanyl. All pain killers...after she healed ..they stopped her pain meds, 3 days went by until the dt's showed..the first thing the Dr.s did was hit her with the downers{bennies}. She is doing alot better and will be cutting all meds sonn. It takes time tho. Good luck

On another note...my friend has been sober for three years and cannot take downs of any kind...the alcohol left brain damage on a cellular level and he aquired clinical depression . No downs for him or he turns to a hermit or gets extreely emotional.

I'm out of temezapam and haven't slept but a couple hours in three days

Damn, sorry to hear that. Thursday is a long way off. Your insurance won't cover it?? I take clonazepam and my insurance doesn't give me any grief, only pay $3.87 or so for a month's worth. Doubt your Dr. has any samples of this laying around, but would be worth a call to his office to ask?? Take care.

it's only about $20 without insurance (most of my meds are $2 cause of Medicare)

but they want me to take Ambien or Lunesta and I can't take those. They make me do stuff like getting dressed in the middle of the night and try to drive in my sleep. And it's like I know I'm doing it but dreaming so I cant stop it. So the insurance wont cover it

so I sit up all night and post stupid stuff. but I have restless leg really bad too so at the same time I'm hoppin around like a one legged tap dancer

They have found that Ambien has that hypnotic effect on some people - they will get dressed and go to work, etc., then wake up and realize they are at work and not know how they got there, really scary stuff that they are driving while they are technically asleep or basically hypnotized by this drug. Not sure if Lunesta does the same, but Ambien has become well known for it. I take clonazepam for sleep, also have restless leg, but not that bad. Just had to ask my neurologist if he would refill them for me, I stopped going to the doc that started me on them (about 2006 - when I was caring for dad in the house and he kept me awake all night). Anyways, I was nervous he would say no, but instead he doubled my script and said they are finding out they help with migraines too. I do like my neuro!! Does chamomile tea or any of the other "natural" sedatives help?
