The train whistle screamed.
As it roared through the night, Its wheels clacked in time. Dusk settled in on the Eagle Express. It would soon be the scene of a crime. Matt Wilson, a despicable cheating poker player, Was seated alone at the rear of the car. His eyes met the gaze of a beautiful sight. He stood up and walked ‘cross the car Sliding up to this desert rose seated at the bar. He gave her a smile, tipped his hat, And said “Evenin’ Ma’am”. She did not reply. Her blue eyes teasing him wildly. He said, “Do you mind if I sit here? My journey’s a long one. Would you care to spend time with me?” Looking away, this vision in white Smiled ever so slightly. Then she pointed a pistol at his belly That was hidin’ on her lap. Her eyes told him, head for the door. Matt followed her unspoken instructions. She walked closely behind Shovin’ the gun in his back. They eased through the door. The platform was narrow. She turned Matt toward the dim light. In a smooth, nervous voice he said, “Dear Madam, how did I offend you? Did I say something that caused you alarm?” She responded with firmly clenched teeth, “My name is Mrs. Constance LaRuge. My mission tonight is to do you grave harm. You stole from a man who played poker with you. You bled him dry of all he possessed. That man was my husband. You took what was ours, The money we needed to build Our ranch and our dreams.” Slowly pulling a wallet from his pocket, Holding it out to Constance he said, “This money I won fair and square. Killing me won’t do anything; Except, send you to the gallows. Take back these funds that I rightfully won, And walk away Miss." Constance reached to take the ill-gotten gains. He grabbed Constance pulling her close. Her perfume was the last thing he ever smelled. The shot caught him under the chin. This mortal wound brought Matt to his knees. His blank gaze stared out into the night. Then he fell from the train. Constance quietly went back inside. She walked through the car without saying a word. One might say her mission was complete. The train continued on its journey. No one ever knew what took place That night on the Eagle Express. |
