The idea that bad experiences are somehow a gift is (IMHO) a popular psychobabble view that a holocaust writer put forth in a popular best seller years ago. That if you had a horrific experience you choose how you react to the action and use it to somehow be a better person. The definition of a better person being someone like him; someone who spent his life listening to other's miseries and saying his was worse but they were lucky, like he was, for surviveing.

Now I suppose someone could say being angry that one has to edure being there when a parent dies is "jaded" (not a word I would use) I doubt many would say surviveing a concentration camp would be something they would want to do. But the mental health community has been trained that this is a better answer than no answer. Without an answer what would they be able to charge for there services?
