Does it matter what a person does for employment when it comes to deciding to date them? Do they need to be employed? Does it matter?

I think it matters. It comes down to whether you want to live paycheck to paycheck or live comfortably. When you're young it doesn't seem to matter as much.

I have raised my sons alone.. the only breadwinner. Now that they are mostly grown I wouldn't want to have to take care of someone... with so many losing jobs right now I would be patient if I truly loved him, as long as he is staying pro-active, doesn't get all lazy on me.

What they do doesn't really matter to me (short of exotic dancing /illegal activities). Most folks are having hard times these days - if he's not employed, that's ok - but he s/b making an effort to find employment. IMO.

frustrated Exotic dancing is not an illegal activity. It is a legitimate job where a lot of money can be made,if one has the talent. be seeing you

This is a great subject

How about this

Research has shown (according to a public radio broadcast few days ago) that the country has shortage of plumbers, electricians, carpenters and so on as we call them in the UK "Tradesmen"

Due to these shortages they stand to earn sometimes six figure incomes

Though there is a tendency of younger folks not to train for these jobs

Why?

People are saying because it is not cool. The society sees them somehow not clever and like lower class. Is this the mentality of the general public in the USA? If so where are we heading?

The only professions that are distasteful to me personally are the one's that live of a commission by pushing paper for whatever reason. The unproductive leaches of the society. Don't need to mention a profession by reading this you know the sort.

Prisoner - I didn't mean that it was illegal, oops if it came off that way. All I meant was that those would be show stoppers for ME. flowerforyou

I do have tremendous amount of respect for specially women who raise family single handed specially the ones who actually do physical labour. I have such a friend very young in the UK she started by waitressing in pubs ended up with a teaching degree and she holds a nice teaching post now. Owns a house and the son is almost going to college.

i don't think i care so much if they work or not, but i think some sort of income is necessary. i don't want anyone financially dependent on me.

As long as they can support themself, I'm not going to worry about the job they have.

Sounds a little shallow on paper, but I prefer to date someone who is already established in a career. If I ever co-habitate with someone again, it would be really nice to have 2 good incomes to put together and make a nice life for all of us. I'm just too old and set in my ways to go through supporting someone again. I know my own limits. He doesn't need to have great wealth, just be able to support himself and his kids (if he has them).

This is probably a whole other subject but, you would be okay with kissing your wife/girlfriend good-bye as she goes off to work on a pole for the night? spock
