Topic: You and your pet | |
---|---|
I had a conversation with my sister and she told me that during Hurricane Katrina that the people that had to be evacuated were told that they could NOT bring their pets. Later many pet volunteers came in to help find and give medical treatment to the poor pets left behind. I would have taken my dog no matter what and told the Red Cross you have to shot me first because my dog goes.
How do you feel about this. Would you have left your pet? |

No way.
Jake ( my lab ) has been here for me when I get really lonely. He has made some of my worst times more bearable. I would never desert him. |

Not if it could have been helped.....but i understand their position.....their main concern was the people at the time!!!!

Hmmmm....in an emergent situation...I grab kids first, paperwork second, dog next...cats, if I can grab them.
Being airlifted or trucked out? I take what I'm told. Or we dig in, and ride it out...it's what we do with cyclones here.. |

Since Hurricane Katrina the people specializing in major diasters have now decided that the NO pet rule was wrong and if another diaster occurs (god forbid)then people will be allowed to take pets if evacuated.
If someone has children than it would be expected that they grab them first and hopefully if time grab thier pets. Many people look at their pets as part of the family. |

About 20,000 people were in the Super Dome, can you imagine if only a third of those people had dogs or cats?
Thats over 6000 animals running around. Thats a lot of pet food and poop to deal with along with all the PEOPLE to take care of. Of course if you took care of your own evacuation its not an issue. |

Hell no! where I go my pet goes. If they still say no I would stay with my pet.

My dog goes or I don't go... And if it was a situation of Red Cross or whatever, and they had the rules of No pets... I would take care of myself and my dog... and they can go help some one else... Of course if I still had a kid at home, they would be the priority, as for room for my pet anywheres.. she is 5 lbs and fits in my purse...

To my eyes people are judge by own they treat animals, so to me no way i would leave my pet behind to maybe die starve and get sick. Compassion and love is for everything not just humans. |

i love my dog and wouldn't want to leave her and doing so would break my heart and leave me with a ton of guilt.
however, if i were told that my children would not be rescued if i took the dog with me, i'd wave goodbye and tell her 'thanks for taking one for the team'. i certainly wouldn't let my children die to save the dog. ~~~~~ i don't understand something: how could anyone tell you with whom, and what, you could evacuate? isn't that just a person choosing to leave their home and go elsewhere? how could they tell you not to take a pet with you if you're leaving the state and staying with, say, a relative? i thought you were meaning the rescue portion of the disaster. |

That was a nightmare. The rescue groups were absolutely swamped with animals. Then in one of the Parishes down there the cops started killing the animals as the people in rescue were scrambling to get them out. Major clusterf**k!
