I had a very brief email encounter on this site right after I first joined. Within two sentences he wanted to know how much money I made, would I talk to him on another site and my SS number!!! Pretty 'f'ing bold! Must have been an amateur!

I also recently received an email saying "per my request" a certain amount of money was to be withdrawn for payment, from my account - ending **** This one came with my actual banks logo on it. Turned out to be my mortgage account which was payed and closed well over two years ago when I sold my house.

I guess, think first, second and third if a red flag pops up!

I had one email me yesterday. His photo was obviously taken from the internet, he listed his profession as "impoter of fine african fabrics" and he told me that he had been overwhelmed by my profile and believed himself to be ready to settle down with me. Now, I know my profile isn't the worst one out there, but it sure isn't written so well as to induce random marriage proposals either!

I couldn't help myself, I toyed with him a bit until he got frustrated and quit talking to me.

I have also encountered a fair (?) number of Russian scammers.

I was on another site for a while and while I was there, I got 13 email responses.

Of those 13. 1 was someone from Nigeria, 11 were Russians, and exactly ONE came from a woman who actually lived here in Michigan.

Needless to say, I didn't stay on that site for long...lol

Here on Mingle it's a completely different story.

I don't get any contacts. Not even from scammers.

Maybe by naming a city in the wrong state, makes the scammer think they will have more of a market of people to scam. Seattle, WA will attract people mainly from exactly there, whereas Seattle, TN will attract people from WA and TN.

Probably not, but its a thought.

Either way, scammers are generally not very bright. Otherwise you wouldnt know you are being scammed quite so quickly. Who knows what goes through their brains(and it is a shame that it isnt a bullet).

The ones I get always have the same story line: widowed, wife killed in accident, has a teen age child that is in boarding school, an engineer..etc.. You would think they would at least change their story line..hah!

Here's something I've been seeing for awhile but never mentioned before....

I'm on a couple of sites where I get e-mail from scammer/spammers constantly, I mean multiples every day. I get a few here, too, but not nearly as many as everywhere else.

More and more, I'm noticing a tendency for them to use a city name that doesn't match with the state name in their location. Like, if I see "Seattle, Washington," OK, I know where that is; but if it's "Seattle, Tennessee," that just sounds wrong.

Now, there may actually be a Seattle, Tennessee, and it's easy enough to check. But something like that always makes me suspicious.

The one who IMed me here last night had a radically wrong city/state matchup. In fact, it was the first thing I asked her about after accepting the IM request.

I said something like: So, (name of city) is in (wrong state name) now? Did they move it? I never heard anything about that.

She says: No, I'm in (name of city), (right state name).

* I should mention here that the name of this particular city could ONLY fit ONE state *

So I asked her why her profile said (name of city), (wrong state name).

She ignored the question and tried to shift the conversation to something else.

So -- I'm not saying every spammer/scammer uses a bad city/state combo. I'm just saying every glaring bad city/state combo I've ever run across has turned out to be a scammer.

It's a little too prevalent to be coincidence, so I'm wondering why it seems so many of them are doing it that way....?

I've been targeted recently, too. Scammers are mostly from somewhere in South Africa and don't speak proper English. They also ignore questions or answer very strangely to both very clear questions and comments. What gives? Do they think they could get close enough to somebody to get a free ticket to America?

When I get scammers addresses I send them care packages. Feral cats. Raccoons. Opossum. The animals are usually very unhappy when they open the box. I make sure I send it C.O.D. Make em pay to get hurt.

Badgers and wolverines just won't let go once they latch on to flesh. Somewhere in ghana is a scammer running around screaming about the devil with a pissed off badger attatched to his buttocks with a pitbull death grip.
