Topic: The Dash... | |
---|---|
With so much news about people dying lately, I thought of this about living... There is a poem by Linda Ellis called "The Dash". I think it is a great thing to think about...and really make sure we live our dash... What does your dash say about you know? What do you want your dash to say that is doesn't yet? http://www.thedashmovie.com/ <<<< here it is in "movie" form here is the poem~ The Dash Poem by Linda Ellis I read of a man who stood to speak At the funeral of a friend. He referred to the dates on her tombstone From the beginning to the end. He noted that first came the date of her birth And spoke of the following date with tears, But he said what mattered most of all Was the dash between those years. For that dash represents all the time That she spent alive on earth And now only those who loved her Know what that little line is worth. For it matters not, how much we own, The cars, the house, the cash, What matters is how we live and love And how we spend our dash. So think about this long and hard; Are there things you'd like to change? For you never know how much time is left That can still be rearranged. If we could just slow down enough To consider what's true and real And always try to understand The way other people feel. And be less quick to anger And show appreciation more And love the people in our lives Like we've never loved before. If we treat each other with respect And more often wear a smile, Remembering that this special dash Might only last a little while. So when your eulogy is being read With your life's actions to rehash Would you be proud of the things they say About how you spent your dash? |

![]() ![]() sorry to hear of your friend... I have heard it read at a few memorials...yet, it is so much about living... My son always said.."your lifetime is today". and with The Dash...it is about that, our lifetime...today. I am sorry to make you sad... |

Someone recently gave me a photocopy of this poem with a really kind personal note written to me at the bottom...
It's in my "love file" at work. I pull this and similar items out when I'm having a really crummy or grueling day and remember why I'm doing the job I'm doing. Nice! ![]() |

Deb, That was a beautiful piece, aside from the snide comment. I have heard it read at funerals also. Thank you for sharing it.
![]() Hope you are feeling better! |

Seems you're back to looking for an argument again. aka http://mingle2.com/topic/show/233525?page=4
I was referring to the comment that there was really no need to make at all. But somebody ALWAYS has to piss on the daisies around here. It NEVER fails. I should just go back to bed! |
