Uhm, I'm going to have to agree with Waterloo. Nascar is a hobby/ interest, not a sport. Sports have to make you exert SOME phsycial effort in my opinion. Then again, I've never been in nascar, it could be the most physically demanding thing and i wouldn't know it. out of all that was listed,Nascar was the only sport that had a purpose when it started out. |

Agreed....at least Bootlegging served a legitimate purpose. Basket ball was a P.E sport..who know what bored retards invented football, soccer, hockey and baseball. Nascar was started by a bunch of guys who made thier living by out running the cops during the Great Depression. THAT is an admirable history... |

nascar is low budget As far as being a sport! LEARN THE HISTORY OF IT!!!!!!!!!!!! As far as being physical....Try driving 500 miles in a 140 degree car!!!! Look at Mark Martin.....50 and ripped!!!!!! In better shape than most men half his age.... 1,2,3,and 4 are ALL SPORTS |

Nascar not a sport. Sure it's physically grueling but so is being put in the old school holes (metal box in the hot sun) in prison. I don't classify it as sport since the car has too much impact on the results. Like horse racing, the horse has too much impact rather than the jockey so not a sport IMO.
I'm not knocking it, it's not like I'm saying that sports are better than hobbies, past times, races, or games, just different. I also don't count golf because the course provides the challenge not the opponent. Gymnastics not a sport because there's too much subjectivity in scoring. For me to consider something a sport: The human has to be doing most of the work (if you think sitting and driving 500 laps is hard work...try being the car and running 500 laps then tell me which is doing the work). It has to have a connection with athletic attributes (strength, agility, speed, hand eye coordination, strategic thinking etc) Your opponent, not the field of play, has to provide the challenge. In a race everyone just runs as fast as they can, doesn't matter if your opponent is a gimp or Usain Bolt (sure it changes where you place but the race is the same). (no swimming is not a sport, it's a race). It can't be a mini version of another sport. Tennis = sport, ping pong...no. Soccer = sport, fooseball no. Scoring cannot be subjective (gymnastics, figure skating get disqualified). |

I think that they all fall under the competition banner. I detest boxing though as I see it as nothing more than a slugfest. At least in other contact sports, like football, the end goal is to score more points. The contact is not the sole end to a means of winning.
