I find it amazing that a conversation can even take place talking about the term "nothing" in general. drinker

Actually, ANYTHING prevents nothing.

Existence (something) and nonexistence (nothing) cannot both occur.

I once gave an impromptu lecture on the topic of "nothing".

I actually gave this presentation to a room full of about 30 professional scientists and engineers.

It was truly hilarious because the mood started out quite serious and dry. The previous presentations were serious reports about the status of a project that wasn't doing well. I was new and at the end of the formal presentations my boss ask me to give a very short presentation to kill the last 10 minutes of the meeting.

He offered this as a challenge telling me that I can speak on any topic I want. He just wanted me to get a feel for speaking in front of the group, all of whom I had previously been individually introduced to.

So I got up in front of the new crowd and hesitated because I couldn't think of what to talk about. So I said that I can't think of anything specific to talk about. One of the scientists then jokingly suggested that I then speak on the topic of nothing. This actually struck a cord with me because I had quite a few thoughts about the concept of nothing at that time. Particularly with respect to the mathematical concept of zero.

So I took the challenge and began to speak about nothing. I actually started the presentation a bit dry and serious. I began by asking the serious question, "What is nothing". And then went on to explain the concept of 'no thing' and asking what precisely do we mean by no thing?

The lecture wasn't going well for the first couple minutes and I was starting to wish I had picked a better topic to ad lib on. But then something I said caused a woman in the front row to wave her hand and jokingly say 'That's nuttin"

Her simple verbiage totally inspired a whole new line of thinking in my mind! I immediately said, "Oh no! Nuttin is not the same as nothing!"

I then turned to the blackboard in the lecture room and went over to the right hand side and wrote down the word "NOTHING", then I walked to the far left side and wrote down the word "NUTTIN".

Then I turned and said, we must never confuse these two terms as they have totally different meanings.

Then I started giving examples.

I said,... If you want to go on a date with someone and they ask you what you are doing on Saturday night you reply, "Nothing" And they then know you are open to going out with them because you have no thing planned.

However, if you are already in the bushes with your date and your parents ask you what you are doing, you yell, 'NUTTIN!"

Yes, my friends, there is a world of difference between doing NOTHING and doing NUTTIN.

People were peeing themselves on the way out of that meeting and my boss was well pleased with my presentation.

After the meeting one of the female scientists asked me if I wanted to hang out with her and just do nuttin. bigsmile

It would explain that feeling of "emptiness" that can occur during life. However, if the feeling can occur, then obviously, there is something to feel it. In the end, I would have to label this as a "cop-out". An easy way to explain an unknown so as not to build up expectation for one who is not comfortable feeling disappointment at the expectation not being met.
