Topic: so much for college! | |
---|---|
Well went to talk with the college today about money.. because I am under 24, not married an have no kids I am still a dependent under my parents even though I do not live with them...I'm not even in the same state!
Well my parents make too much money, so the loan I was gonna get only covered $7,634 so I would have to pay $8,291 over 21 month which is just bout $400 a month! yeah I can't afford that. I have been online for most of the day trying to find grants, either I'm looking at the wrong stuff or I'm dumb. Every website I look at wants me to spend money to get a grant. so yeah as of now... I'm not gonna go to college. My parents can not afford to take out another loan, they just got one like 2 months ago for a new car. They can't afford to help me an besides I don't want them to help me! Its my education I wanna pay for it myself! Can just never win anymore |

if you don't live with your parents and they don't take care of you you can apply as an independent student. ask about that in the loan office.

the government is crap, here I am trying to better myself by going to college an I can't because they go by my parents income. I just don't understand why they do this. Why 24? thats just a odd age.

Once you're 25, you will be able to apply independently from your parents.

Just take a few years off get married. Put your wife, and her kids through school; she will leave you when she graduates. Here is the kicker, while your living at home with the same sucky $8.00/hr job, things begin to change. I now make more in college loans and grants than I do at my regular job. And even though she took the car, I will buy one with the left over cash. Your still young, so waht do you say, make a spouse a better person. |

Several options: Private loan, you'll need your parents to co-sign it most likely. Also they'll look at your credit, but as long as your parents have good credit and they co-sign you should be able to get one. Is that the cheapest school you can find? Otherwise you can start classes at the cheapest community college, even go part time maybe, then transfer to a different school at a later time. This way at least you'll have some credits already done. Have you considered an associates degree in an area that you're interested in pursuing a degree in? Why not see if you can move back in with the parents and go to school somewhere close by there? At least you won't have room and board and probably not much in bills (unless the parents are going to charge you rent). 400 a month in that scenario would probably be doable. Again you can get new loans and transfer out when you turn 24. |

Once you're 25, you will be able to apply independently from your parents. get behind on sh!t cause I cant afford anything but gas? focus on the positive, focus on what you CAN do, focus on what you CAN change... modify your plan, take fewer classes, borrow the money, work 2 jobs... the difficulty of college is not the academics, it is the life expericnes you have as you work toward a degree... if you want it bad enough, you will do what it takes... don't blame anyone but yourself, there is always a way... the government does not owe you an education, your parents do not owe you an education - it is your responsibility to educate yourself. Stop blaming everyonen else for your problems - grow up and handle it yourself! geeez, young people today -- I want it, whaaaaaa whaaaaa - grow up and go get what you want. Many MAny MANY people before you have been in worse situations and they were able to pull themselves up and get an education - your young - your healthy, work for it... it will be rearding in the end. |

Well I moved from OH to NJ. so moving back in out of the question right now.
I work part-time so I only make $400-$600 a month. I am looking into grants I an trying everything I can think of. I plan to work for it so don't get mouthy with me! You don't know me! I can only afford to pay MAYBE $100 a month for college. Money is way to tight. My credit is really bad so getting a person loan is not gonna happen. I cant get a student loan because I am still a dependent under my parents. |

Why is moving back home not an option? Did you have a falling out with your parents?
Here's the thing, Fafsa gets you loans that are from the dept of education. This is funded by tax dollars. The government, and not incorrectly IMO, decided that a family should be responsible for their child's education, not the tax payers. Lowering the independent age would just allow a lot of recent college grads to claim themselves as independent (thus getting more money) even if their parents can afford it. Everyone would do it this way and there wouldn't be enough money or taxes would have to go up. I don't know your situation. But 400-600 in NJ is barely scraping by, if that. If you lived at home at least that money could be saved for school, if you're on your own I don't see how you're going to save anything at all. And any emergency situation that comes up will most likely put you in a very bad situation. Yeah it's not fun living at home with the parents (at least I don't think it is) but you might have to sacrifice that. Even if you have bad credit, talk to the bank anyways. Like I said, if your parents or another relative is willing to cosign, you'll still get the loan. Of course if you have bad credit, maybe your family isn't going to trust you enough to co-sign. If your family is unwilling to help you at all then you're going to have to figure out something different for work. Pharmacy Technicians make good money and don't require college degrees. Some places will give on the job training but it's better to take the certification test but you can take classes online. Oh I forgot another option. Try to get a job at the school you want to go to, often times they have tuition remission so you can at least start taking a few classes while working. Work study is another option but it won't cover the entire rest of the cost. |
