My deck looks like crap!

I bought the ugliest color of stain EVER!
When i first started spraying it I thought it would change color as it dried. ( to look like the picture )
Directions said I needed 3 galons and I bought 5 and STILL didn't have enough!
Doggies decided they wanted to sleep and walk all over it last night while I slept.

So even if it wasn't the ugliest color ever. Now it is all smudged and doggie prints everywhere!

What can I do the color is Thompsons red cedar. Can I cover it?
I dont really want to paint it. I wanted a natural looking stain.

from what I remember (no expert) you have to strip or sand the old color off then re-stain

You could switch to a "solid bodied" stain and try it in a small patch to see if it will cover over the stain you used but the reality of it is that you will need to get out the 60 grit sand paper, a sander, and some elbow grease and sand it down. Also there is no substitute for using a rag to apply it. Spraying is usually reserved for areas that you cannot get a rag. Redwood sands fast with 60 grit.

Behr penetrating oil base is a decent stain. I know it is an Evil Orange product BUT it does work. I just did a deck repair and used it to stain the wood. It was sticky the next day but was 'color fast.'

It is important to block all access to the deck to pets on the first night after staining. I mean seriously, if they are yard dogs you had better be ready to lock them in the garage for their own safety and the sake of your investment. I am sure you are going to have fun sanding your arms off if it is a big deck...

umm...time for a new deck? other than that, i think your only options are priming and painting it or to do a LOT of sanding.

If the stain was a solvent base, get some mineral spirits and a bunch of rags. If the stain was a latex base use hot water and rags.

The sooner you start rubbing and wiping the stain off the better. If the product stays on for a week it will only get harder to remove.
