umm...time for a new deck? other than that, i think your only options are priming and painting it or to do a LOT of sanding.

It is a brand new deck. I just built it last summer this was the first stain....Guess I am sanding!

so that's why you're asking for all hands on deck. you're gonna need some help. what's the pay?
ok I m there...but get some tequlia I have a margareta machine ill bring it over....

Cold beer and loud music!

My deck looks like crap!

I bought the ugliest color of stain EVER!
When i first started spraying it I thought it would change color as it dried. ( to look like the picture )
Directions said I needed 3 galons and I bought 5 and STILL didn't have enough!
Doggies decided they wanted to sleep and walk all over it last night while I slept.

So even if it wasn't the ugliest color ever. Now it is all smudged and doggie prints everywhere!

What can I do the color is Thompsons red cedar. Can I cover it?
I dont really want to paint it. I wanted a natural looking stain.

hi. i work for olympic. we do wood seals stains and paints. dead serious.

strip it. then go to lowes... tell them what kind of wood you have. because depending on the wood the color changes with stains. it also changes depending on the quality and thickness of product.

you want something with a good seal built in.

and if you have to.. buy smaller sizes just to test on your wood. test the colors you want.

olympic has displays where you can buy samples of toners and semitransperents for like 72 cents. seriously.

then you go home.. CLEAN THE WOOD FIRST (buy a deck cleaner)
and then use the samples to see which color works well with your wood.

hope that helps :)

and to think its only a lil summer job. :D

What bobbysocks said.

Your first mistake was using Thompson's.

Why? Aren't they reputable? I've used them in the past with no problems.

I've done a lot of decks, and restained plenty as well. The predominant reason for them needing to be restained was because the Thompson's they had used, under the assumption of them being reputable, had flaked like old paint within two years. Trying to work with the company for compensation is like pulling teeth, and even if they DO work with you, they will only do the bare minimum to help. Like any normal business in Corporate America, they're happy to take your money, but they sure as hell don't want to give you any of it back.

Do yourself a big favor. Spend the money. Buy the $30/gallon stuff. You get what you pay for. It may seem like a lot of money, but it's definitely worth it.

I'm with bobbysocks on this one. I don't work for Olympic, but that is the stain that I use and I like it a lot.

I use the cedarnaturaltone. It is a semi-transparent sealer/toner, and it really looks nice. I can see the wood grain through it, it adds some nice color, and it protects the wood. It doesn't last as long as they say it will on my deck, but I am not out there redoing it every six months or every year.

Olympic's deck cleaner really works. I am sure it has some bleach in it. But, it cleans all of the old stain off to prepare for a new application. It may be easier, if this deck cleaner works on Thompson's stain, to spray this stuff on and rinse it off instead of doing a lot of sanding. Try it on a small spot or better yet, a scrap piece of your wood with some of the stain on it.

I am not sure I have any scrap left and nowhere that I am willing to chop a piece off...I like the apply and rinse idea better than sanding...I have a couple days off this week and will check into that.
I will do a sample first!

I had the same problem some years ago. I may even have had you same color. I did some test samples with a different stain on top of the cedar and ended up with one that looked ok. The one I used on top was Pine, or something that had the word pine (red pine, white pine?) in it.

The good side of this solution is

... that two applications of stain last way longer than one.

... The color really looked ok when I finished.

... I didn't waste any time and effort stripping the old one off.

Nach you have to make sure the two types are compatible if you change brands. I Think I started off with Thompson's but switched to Behr semi transparent deck stain.

I have used both Thompson's and Behr. Not impressed with either one of them. I would sand down to bare wood each time, two coats. And by the end of the second summer they needed to be done again.
