Take 1200 mg of Vitamin C and do weight bearing excercises.
I was diagnosed 3 years ago and doing this has made it less.

There are also prescription drugs you can take that help slow down bone loss and help build up what you've already lost.

Other than that, calcium, calcium, calcium, weight bearing exercises and more calcium. If you don't like dairy, there are plenty of other foods you can eat that are high calcium. Calcium found naturally in foods are better than supplements but supplements are also helpful.

If you do go the dairy route, watch your cholestrol levels.

Calcium pills are also an option.

Also don't drink soda caffeinated, cola type sodas seem to be the worst according to a study done by Tufts University.

If you were diagnosed with osteoporosis, did he mention starting you on a bisphosphonate to help rebuild your bones?? There are a few different ones, Fosamax is a taken weekly, Boniva monthly, and Reclast is an IV that is taking once a year. These drugs seem to help rebuild the bones in most people taking them but they normally have to take 1200 to 2000 mg of calcium also, and exercise, and take vitamin D to help the body metabolize the calcium. They are finding that people need more vitamin D than thought before. A doctor told me to take 5000 IU a day, they used to say only 400 IU a day. If you are in a climate that doesn't get as much sun, you need more vitamin D as you don't get it from the sun. Tylenol will help the pain, also ibuprofen, but it is harder on the stomach.

You should ask your doctor about these meds, if they haven't already discussed them with you. It can take a few years for them to start to turn around the bone loss, but the studies are showing that they are working in most people with osteoporosis. Good luck.

Acetaminophen is generally not very effect with this type of pain. One thing that may be helpful is Acupuncture and/or massage. There are also other medications (non-narcotic) and natural things that can help with pain.

Good luck and work with a pain interventionist if you can...they have many things that can help...both of Western and Eastern medicine!
